    Hi,
I've got a Dell Inspiron 1720, with this DVD writer. It won't write CD-R's (that's what I'm trying to get working at present.) It's still under warranty, so I've spent several hours with their support people to no avail. They've sent me a replacement DVD writer, just as bad. They've got me to reinstall drivers etc., and have now done a clean install of Vista - still doesn't work. Hopefully the will replace the drive with a different make, or replace the laptop, or give me my money back.

This drive is causing a lot of problems for everyone across all models. It seems like they need to discontinue using it.

I'm having the same problem with a 1525. I'm getting really fed up with Dell. I can spend hours on the phone with no progress, and then they hang up on me.

I just want my CD drive to work. I paid good money for this thing.

The device manager says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" Any idea what that means?

Call Dell and tell them to replace your drive. I can't tell you how many times I've come across users on this board with problems and they have that drive.

I just did that. This is the new drive that I just replaced because the old one was having the exact same problem.

Well, unfortunately you are going to have to get back with them and demand a different model. For whatever reason they still have these in stock and are just trying to get rid of them.

Odd ... I've never had a problem with the two of mine. Except for the annoying growling it does when I turn on the computer.

I got the following answer on another board. So far it seems to have worked:
