I just did a clean install of XP on my new D630 and have a few questions. I've done plenty of clean installs before and never run into these problems. I was looking through the clean install FAQ thread, but didn't see these issues; sorry if I overlooked them and this is a repost. Problems:

    1. For some reason, on my battery power settings, "hibernate" is no longer an option.

    2. When I start my computer, I'm given the option to choose between 2 OSs: Windows XP... and Windows XP. Not sure why the computer's still seeing 2.

    3. This may be related to the above... As Amber's guide suggested, I checked the Device Manager after installing my drivers/windows updates. For some reason, I'm showing 2 ACPI Batteries, 2 965 Chipsets, 3 plug and play monitors, 2 Core Duo processors, and several system boards... all I can think of is that there may be newer drivers I need to download (I used the drivers/utilities disk).

    Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like you installed an OS over top another OS. When you did a clean install did you reformat the entire HD before? Did you install first and run into any problems then had to restart the install. I have done this before, not wiping clean a HD and in turn installed two versions of XP which always gives me the option of loading both installs.

This site suggests ways to get rid of the unwanted install.

Thanks for posting the guide. The only problem is that when I got to step 6, there's no folder in my C: drive that corresponds to the unwanted XP... i.e. theres nothing but 5 folders: Dell, Intel, Docs, Program Files, and WINDOWS (which is the good one)... I'm continuing with the guide now, but this worries me...

Try reading through this. This might prove easier. Approach with caution.

Reading through what?... Anyway, it must have been some freak occurrence, because all I had to do was delete the line referring to the unwanted XP copy from the boot file and that got rid of problem #1.

However, the device issue persists Manager's still showing 2 ACPI Batteries, 2 965 Chipsets, 3 plug and play monitors, 2 Core Duo processors, and several system boards...

I thought that this might just be a feature of intel chipsets and did a little research. I found this: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel945gm/sb/CS-022204.htm, which explains the monitor situation. It also occurred to me that I've never had a dual core processor, so maybe having 2 show up is normal... but 2 batteries? 2 Chipsets? Multiple system boards (I assume I'm asking a newbie question here, sorry :))?

I recently performed a 'clean install' of XP Pro on my D620 with results much as you have described. I corrected it by doing the following:

    F12, boot to CD,
Let windows perform its primary load stopping at the HDD choices,
    Deleted all partitions,
Created one primary partition at largest allowable size,
    Performed a quick format,
    Loaded WinXP,
Loaded the Dell drivers and applications per Dell's suggested order of doing so (the load order is indicated within the drivers disk),
Loaded my own software, updates, etc.

I'm new at this stuff and I know I just explained a procedure that most everyone already knows how to do. Just adding here what worked for me.
