I have a Dell Inspiron 1501, i ordered it with a sempron 3500 which is supposed to be 1.8 ghz, however under system in performance and maintenance it shows up as only 799 mhz sometimes, while 1.7 ghz other times. what is the deal?

Its most likely just throttling based on need, just AMD's version of something similar to Intel's SpeedStep doing it's job.

its amds power now, it will throttle up to speed when it needs to, its seamless and you will never notice it, this helps keep the machine cool and will help to extend its overall life, it also helps extend battery life while on the go

just noticed the 1.7, what exactly are you using to get that?, what does it say when you go to control panel, click system, that should bring up the system properties tab, and it should read 1.8 while on ac power
