I am cleaning up an old Inspiron 9400 for a non-profit client for them to use as a basic computer in a transitional home.

Can the T2300 it came with be swapped out with a T5500 I had lying around? I know the sockets fit, but is the chipset compatible, and will the BIOS support it? The bios is still on rev A01. Would I have to use the old proc, update the bios, then change the proc back to the new one, if it will even work for that matter?

EDIT: they both are compatible with the same chipset, and after reviewing the fix list for the later bios' it seems that Dell did allow the T5x00 processors to work on the 9400, however this wasn't done until rev. A04.

Do I have to put the laptop back together with the old processor first, update the bios, and then change it out? Or will it be able to post and boot from CD with the T5500 straight away and allow me to update the bios? I don't think it will work that way, but I just wanted to make sure before I do it the long way.

You should update the BIOS first, but unless you have like BIOS A01, the T5500 should just work.
