I spoke with Dell, and someone there told me that you couldn't just swap out processors in the Studio 17. Said the processors are soldered to the motherboards. Is this true?

Example of what I'm wanting to do::
If I were to order one with the Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor...could I later switch it out for the the T9600? If you can just switch it out, is it as fairly easy to do?

Also, if I were to get the Intel Core i7 720QM processor, could I switch it out at a later date to the i7 820QM?

The Dell rep you spoke to knows nothing. Take a look at the service manual for the Studio 1745 here where it clearly shows how you can remove and replace the processor.

You could swap the i7-720 to the i7-820 yes - assuming the BIOS supports it, and considering the notebook ships with both processors then I think it's a safe bet you'd be fine with it. You couldn't however switch from a T6600 to a i7 due to a different architecture being utilised in the processors.

That's what I thought. Gotta be careful talking to Dell Sales.

I'll probably re-order a Studio 17 with the T6600, and then switch it out one day to the T9600 when I can get one cheaper.

If you get the T6600 you can swap it for a T9600. If you get the Core i7 720QM, you can swap it for an 820QM. However, you cannot go between the categories (Core 2 Duo to Core i7 or vice versa), because as Fragilexx mentions, they are entirely different architectures, and use different sockets and chipsets.

The GPU however is not upgradable as this is soldered directly onto the motherboard. Only way to upgrade that is to buy a new motherboard.
