Hey, I saw that Dell has the special for up to 20% off notebooks that ends May 12. I was wondering if you think this is a good deal, or if I should wait for Dothan to be released to possibly drive down prices.

There are definitely some good offers in there and I don't think you'll beat those deals -- they're not releasing any coupon codes this week so that likely means the prices are rock bottom as they are.

    However

Next week the Dothan will arrive. It could mean Dell will release some new notebooks, and it definitely means prices on the current Pentium M chips will be cut (but you'd have to wait for those prices to be reflected in the notebook prices).

Here's an article that has the exact price cuts on the Pentium M chips:

I got the email from dell about this today and was upset because I had just ordered my Inspiron XPS a few days ago. I went to the website and cnfigured a machine identical to mine and it came out to be $42.00 more with the 20% off offer this week than when I ordered. When I ordered they had free dvd burner and $250.00 off the XPS. I was also able to use a coupon for 10% off on top of that. I think that most of the time the different promotions will keep the price within a small margin of each other. I am sure that dell doesn't want people calling in, pissed of that they paid $200.00 more last week. From a business point of view it makes sense to keep offering different promotions, to keep people interested and stuff and to give the illusion of a bargain, but have the net effect of each promotion be similar in terms of pricing. Just my .02 and experiences. This may not hold true in all situations...

Those P-M reductions in price are pretty nice, especially for the 1.7 GHz. However, if I am thinking of getting a decked out laptop (128 mb video card, 7200 rpm hard drive, etc.), do you think I should order the laptop now with the 15% off (i'm talking about the inspiron 8600)? Even with getting a 1.7 P-M, do you think the reduction in the processor price from Dothan will be more than the current 15% off everything? Also, do you think those prices will fall in the near future?
