After doing a great deal of research I finally ordered a Dell XPS M170.

On Dell's tracking page, status shows "Order on Hold." Order date shows Feb 9th. After finally getting to someone helpful on support, I was told they hold orders for the first 24 hours until they verify all pieces are in stock for the build. This was yesterday afternoon (10th). Is this common or should I worry?

Estimated ship date is the 20th. Why 11 days to build? Even though, estimated delivery is 23rd through 27th!! Am I getting screwed here?

Oh, and when I purchased, the configuration on Dell was $3,770.13. I purchased for $3,181.30 through Army/Air Force Exchange Online (for all you military folks) with the exact conf. Dell online today has the same conf. for $4,089.00 Gotta love business!!

On a side note, the option to include the backup CDs has disappered. I'm hopeing they started to automatically include it.

I've never seen that, but I know mine was held in pre-build for awhile. Yes it does take awhile to build. Plus Dell over estimates. The laptops are built in Malaysia, then shipped to Tennessee for shipment, so it takes 3 days in boxing phase (this is when it is on its way to the states). Then another day to go from Tennessee to the regional UPS/DHL/FedEx shipping center.

If it hasn't moved by Mon. evening, I would call them and make sure that everything is okay.

Yeah, I was afraid it might be legit. You can spend 30K on a car and drive it off the lot, but spend 3K on a computer and you have to wait 2-3 weeks!!

    Thanks for the input SouthernGirl.

The system finally went into "In Production" phase Yesterday morning. The great part is, by last night, it was in "Boxing!" It went through Kitting, Build, and testing in less than a day. Now I guess I'll wait the three days in "Boxing" till it arrives in the US. I'm not building up my hopes, but it looks like there's a chance it might arrive before the 23rd. Waiting is the hardest part!

Normally it arrives before scheduled delivery date. The tricky part is that dell will sometimes put a hold on yourship, so the carrier can't deliver it to the 23rd. If that happens, you should be able to call dell.

You were right SouthernGirl; exactly 3 days in "Boxing." I just got the tracking information and the departure scan confirms a delivery date of 20 Feb!!
