    hi guys, my question is:

    if a 9100 and an 8600 is configured with almost the same specs, which would perform better? or is there any difference at all? (apart from the size, weight etc.)

    E.g. let's make it P4 3 Ghz or equivilent, 1G RAM, ATI 9700 128 MB, 60G 7200rpm, WSXGA etc....

    If no significant difference, let's bring back the issue of weight and battery life, 8600 would be a better choice then? or am I wrong?

    Thanx for ur time

    1 min later, I realized that I missed a crucial factor: cost. please do consider the $$$!

    There is little comparison between the two. the 8600 is available with the 9600 pro turbo, while the 9100 has the optional radeon 9700, which is 25% faster. The 8600 uses a pentium M while the 9100 uses a pentium 4. At a given price point, the 9100 is faster, and the 8600 has better life. The 8600 could never have the same 3d graphics performance as the 9100, and the 9100 could never have the battery life of the 8600.

    9100 has firewire port which rocks for video editing, from what I understand the 8600 dosnt have the firewire.

    Inspiron 9100- 3.2ghz P4 HT - 1gb RAM - 100GB HD - 4x dvd/cd burner -128mb ATI 9700. Too Much Computer for Such a n00b!

    it has a 4-pin 1394 port, so you need an adapter. But yes, the 9100 is far better suited for video editing.

    GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120

    I just got an 8600 last week or so, and it has a firewire port.

    Dell Inspiron 8600
    Intel Centrino 1.5 GHz
    1024 MB PC2700 DDRRAM @ 333MHz
    ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro 128 MB
    40 GB HDD

    i'm thinking of getting a 9100 with a 2.8ghz PIV and MR9800... do you think it will be a big difference in gameplay results with that setup as oppose to a 3 or 3.2 ghz with all other components being 1 gig ram, 7200rpm hd, wsxga+ screen???
