I bought an Intel QX9300 online for my upcoming Alienware m17x. When I tested the QX9300 in a Dell Inspiron 1420 today, the system fail to boot into bios.
Does anyone know if Inspiron 1420 motherboard support qx9300 or not? I am trying to figure out if I received a DOA chip or not.
Many thanks in advance

Try a BIOS update.

If I remember correctly, the Inspiron 1420 is Santa Rosa, using second gen Meroms, (T7300, T7500, T7700), while the QX9300 is second or third gen Penryn.
If that's true, then they're lightyears apart, and putting in a QX9300 into a mobo designed for a T7500 could result in unrepairable damage to the motherboard. -
It appears their motherboard is fine after replacing back with the default CPU (powers on and boots into Vista). Do you think this short test could damage my QX9300?
I mean the CPU socket on 1420 has the same pin layout as QX9300. Wouldn't Intel redesign the pin layout if there is a voltage difference? -

The Inspiron 1420 won't support a QX9300. Period. The Socket pinout is indeed the same, but the 965 chipset won't support 1066MHz FSB processors like the QX9300. Period. This is not even to mention that the BIOS won't support and power circuitry probably won't support said processor...

Obviously, the "tech" at Dell's authorized service center doesn't know what he is doingcan't believe I got charged $50 for the service.
Now, do you think my QX9300 could be damaged by this? I can't test it until my Alienware m17x arrive. If so, I need to seek some kind of remedy from them. -
Cmdr Wolf is correct. The Inspiron 1420 uses the old Intel Santa Rosa platform with the 965 chipset, which can only use processor FSB's of up to 800MHz. The QX9300 requires a Montevina platform laptop with the 45 chipset.
Whoever that technician was should be fired. There are unemployed people way more deserving of his job. -

Aye, the chip simply will not post, but as long as it was competently installed, the chip itself is most likely fine.
I am sure when your M17x arrives, it will post and boot as expected.
QX9300 compatible with Inspiron 1420?
