I got a 25% off coupon and i really want inspiron 640m with C2D. Everything on it is good except the ONLY video card option is the GMA950 which completely blows. Is dell expected to add more video options onto it before Sept.15th (when my coupon expires)?

Keep in mind that i'm located in Canada therefore i have to use dell.ca.

you should just get the e1505. its just a little bigger and you can have a dedicated video card.

I considered the e1505/6400 but i will be carrying this laptop around everyday for school and a 15.4" seems too big and heavy for that.

It's physically impossible to have a dedicated video card in the E1405/640M

Asus puts an x1600 into the W3J, which is just as small if not smaller. Dell puts the Quadro NVS 110 into the D620, which IS thinner. It's not physically impossible, it's just that Dell is keeping the E1405/E1505 oriented to basic computing needs in order to keep costs low for the target buyer. But if you main to say that it is physically impossible due to the E1405s design, then yes, that is correct. It is not designed for a dedicated card for reasons stated above.

Don't expect this to change ever. I doubt you'll even see a dedicated card in the next Inspiron 14" offering either.

if you want to go dell and need dedicated graphics, its either the m1210, with a 12.1 screen and gf7400, in the $1200 to $1500 range, or the 1505 wich can be had for under a grand nicely configured, and really doesnt make much more of a footprint than the 640m, when I was able to walk, I carried my e1505 around about 6 miles a day everyday,it wasnt any different than my14" compaq evo n600c, and if they ever fix my back, I'll be doing it again

well i guess that rules out the 640m... i would want the m1210 for portability but on dell.ca it STARTS at $1700+. the e1505/6400 seems too big/heavy but i guess i dont have a choice =S

well, when you think about it, is one extra inch and one extra pound on your back really going to be that big of a difference? maybe it is, since this is going to be my first laptop, but it doesnt seem like it would be.

If you want a 14" with a dedicated card, maybe you should look at other notebooks... Asus has quite a few, like the A8jm and W3j. Then there is the much cheaper barebone option: The Asus S62j with the 7300go.

Asus also got a contract with dell for one of their new notebooks coming out sometime in the future. It's going to be a 14" and quite possibly have a dedicated graphics card option. Might be part of dells XPS line... who knows..
