I just received my new E1705 last week and I am loving it......but I had to wait till today to receive the "included in price" backpack which is supposed to fit the 17 inchers and I am really having a hard time trying to get the notebook to fit! Basically, it won't!![]()
The way the pack is structured has some side bumpers at the top corners of the computer holding pocket and there is really no way the computer will fit into that area! Believe me, this pack is large enough to hold a 17 inch computer.
Has anyone else had this problem? Or am I just lame at packing a bag?

I had the same problem with the Mobile Edge Premium 17in bag. There was nothing I could do to make the 9300 fit in it.
Yet we've had several users say that they can get the laptop to fit in it.
In my opinion, it might be better to get a sleeve type bag instead because by the time you put your laptop in the bag + books, it weights alot. The 17in backpacks are always so bulky and big, that I gave up trying to use them. -
Yep, mine is the Mobile Edge Premium bag also, and you are right, it just doesn't fit
I still want a pack though, I don't carry books just the notebook and accessories so I guess I will go shoppin...... after call and complain to Dell, (nicely of course)
One more question, what is the size of your avatar? I have reduced mine down to 16 or less kb, and when I try to upload on the custom settings page it says it is 24kbs. I have reduced the dpi, and it is saved as a small file.
It is also less than 150x150 pixels.
Thanks! -
If you return the bag, make sure Dell pays for the shipping. It's incredibly obnoxious that they would sell accessories that do not do what they were specifically designed to do. The first replacement to come to mind is this Targus:

I have the Mobile Edge backpack, and my i9300 works fine in it. The pictures were taken with my camera phone, so they are not the best in the world.

Thanks for the info HMLintz! -
Wow ccbr01, those are actually great pix for a cell phone!
I do however notice that your pack looks different in a couple of ways, one is the color, (not that that has anything to do with it) but also you don't seem to have those big side bumpers at the top edges of the compartment, and you can also secure the notebook with the velcro strap!
On the pack I received, not only can you not get the computer into the pocket (bumpers interfere) but there is no way in hades I can get the strap even close to coming over the top of the computer!
Looking at the packing slip I noticed that the item description says:
"9100 notebook dell only"......hmmmm its just plain wacky!
In the Dell website description is says:
Backpack is specifically designed to hold and protect your Dell™ Inspiron™ 8600 / 9100 / 9200 / 9300 / XPS notebooks.
Time to call Dell! -
Are you sure you can't take out the bumpers? They might be velcroed in there.

This is my bag. It took me awhile to find it. The price has went down alot. I paid 54+tax/shipping for mine. -
Hi Squirrelgurl,
Once you return your current backpack, take a look at this one. This is the same backpack they shipped with the i9300s, only without the Dell logo. Good backpack, great price, and I am able to carry my XPS Gen 2 in it comfortably.

Thanks Howdogg74 for the suggestion, that pack looks great! After a very long and really frustrating phone call to Dell yesterday, I arranged for them to do the pick up and pay the shipping and handling costs, and I told them I did not feel responsible for the re-stocking fee if there was one.
I am so glad I found this forum, because in the weeks before I decided which computer I wanted to buy (XPS M170 or E 1705), I followed alot of threads relating to this same question, and reading what people had to say (who know a heck of alot more than I do about computers), helped me make my decision.
I was a little worried about whining about a backpack, but I am overwelmed and gratefull for all the help and suggestions I received!

You're very welcome! Let me know if you have questions on the Samsonite backpack.

Hmmm....that's odd, I have the Dell backpack for my 9300 and it fits perfectly!! I'll post pictures of it with the computer in it when I get off work. In the meantime, here's a picture of the backpack (not a good one though).

There are these side bumpers at the top the won't let my 9400 fit into the compartment. At first, i also thought they were sewn in, but examining them closely, i found out that the lower ends of the bumpers could be opened (they are just velcroe closed) and the foam material could be taken out, leaving just the empty coverings (see attached pics).
After that, my 9400 would fit perfectly well. Perhaps the Mobile Edge Premium Backpack has a similar construction (the grips of both backpacks look very similar, at least)....Attached Files:

Before I did anything drastic (like removing the bumpers), I tried to estimate if the computer was going to fit without them, and still the top of the notebook would have to be really wrestled in there. So I gave up and called Dell and complained, and the result is that they had DHL come to my house and pick up the box, and I do not pay any shipping/handling or restocking fees. Yay! Since I have no patience, (for ordering things), I went to Best Buy and bought a "Targus XL Notebook Backpack". I like it because it has room for my Wacom tablet, chill pad, accessories, and my purse
Sure, I'm 5' 2" tall so I look like a Sherpa, but its pretty comfy.
I don't need to haul this stuff around everyday so that's cool! I had a Best Buy gift certificate so the pack only cost me 40 bucks!
