Ok, so I wrote in a couple other threads that I didn't receive my OS disc from dell. I went to the site and filled out their back up request form twice now, but I haven't gotten any replies, nor have I received the disk.

My question is, for any who have used the service, how long should I expect to wait for my disc and will I get some sort of confirmation email?

I need my disc so that I can use the HDD I plan to upgrade to (a 320 gig). Is there a way to get my copy of Vista on my 320gig without the disc?

    Many thanks in advance. :)

You should get it within a few days. Once I ordered backup discs at 8PM at night, and they were on my doorstep when I came home from work that day.

    Definitely call them.

As for your copy...you can use something like Acronis or Ghost to image the drive, but using the Dell CDs are best because you will get rid of all the pre-installed crap ware.

Ah thanks for that. I ordered them last Thursday and never got word or the discs. I really should call them any way, my notebook came with 333 mhz ram instead of the advertised 667. Actually not a big deal because I was going to add more anyway, but it's kind of the principle of the thing.

I have avoided installing anything from my desktop on this machine yet because I want to put it all on the bigger drive. I may try those programs if I can't get the OS disc.

    Thanks for the reply :)

Update: I figured out the ram thing. It turns out that ram and system testing programs like cpuID display dual channel ram as half of its actual speed, even though it is performing at its fullest. So my 667mhz ram is actually just being "displayed" at 333 even though it is running at 667.

    Omniauric,

Definetly call Dell Tech Support. In the sea of webs that comprises Dell's customer service/technical support divisions, it is likely that you request may have gotten lost within the system. I generally find that calling or chatting is the best way to get efficient tech support from Dell.

About the RAM - that's strange. I didn't know that 333 mhz DDR II ram existed. Even though you are planning on upgrading the RAM, they sent you an inferior product (compared to what you paid for). Call them up and file a complaint, and perhaps they may even upgrade your RAM for you.

    Good Luck!

Ok. This is becoming way more hassle than it's worth. I called Dell over a week ago to get my OS disc. After getting bounced between 3 people I finally got one who could help. He filed the request for me to get my disc. Said it'd be 3-5 days. I said great. Today a box from dell comes. I think, "yay! finally!". I open it up and inside are two pieces of packing foam, an order slip for "1 Vista Premium Sticker", and a little baggie containing one windows vista logo sticker. WTF.

I called them again and they resent my request and said it will take 3-5 days to process, so i should get it about next week sometime. This whole time i'm refraining from installing anything important (like office, photoshop, flash, WoW, or anything else) on my stock 80gig HDD because I don't want to have to reinstall everything again when I get the OS disc and pop in my 320gig HDD. This has been a very annoying experience.

What? Really? So instead of the OS disc, you got a Vista Sticker? Haha...this is simply absurd...why do Dell ship those stickers out anyways? Are there actually people requesting for those?

Actually there was a time when I made them send me the correct sticker lol. I had bought a P4 desktop with Hyper Threading (back when HT was brand new). Dell sent me the standard P4 sticker. When I sold the computer a couple months later, the sticker really improved resale value (seriously because they guy wanted to buy a stock PC on which no one had upgraded any of the components - don't ask why).

In another incident I recall that one of my colleagues bought a Centrino setup system but Dell had included the standard Pentium M sticker. He was furious, so he called up Dell and had them send him his Centrino sticker.

So in sum, yes there are users that request the stickers.

TO the OP - I hope this second request really gets this taken care of. Also for future reference, in the even of misisng parts, you should call Customer Care not Technical Support, because they can get those issues taken care of within 1 or 2 business days. (i.e. they will overnight you the disk). Since this was a brand new system, you should ask them to extend your 21 day return period since you lost a lot of time in testing your system without the OS reinstall disk.

Good points. This was not a brand new system though. Got it from the outlet store. (It's a Vostro 1500 2.2ghz Core 2 4mb/800fsb, 2gigs ram, 80gig HDD, 256 8600gt, wireless N, bluetooth, webcam, all for ~$700. The condition it is in is impeccable. Very happy with it).

I did call their customer care line, and I actually got bounced back to tech then bounced back over to customer care, lol. Overall, the service people are very friendly and great to work with, but the waiting is killing my productivity time. I also use this laptop to write newsletters for our business, as well as run a personal blog. Not having all my productivity tools installed (like office, photoshop, fireworks and all that) is really cramping me.

Hopefully the last call helped. If I get another sticker I'll probably just breakdown and buy an OEM copy from newegg. :mad2:
