    I need office with publisher. I noticed it's like almost $300 to get that preloaded on my dell. WOuld it be cheaper to buy it and install myself? Is installing office easy?

    Yeah, I guess. It's whatever the newest version of Office is. I always called mine Office XP so I guess I assumed this was called Office Vista. Thank you so much for not "yelling at me" since I called it the wrong name. SOme message boards can be mean like that.

    No worries mate. I thought I was out of date :p. I have been using Office 2007 since it came out. Two years since they launched it, if memory serves. I am a power user, tend to work a lot with office and it was a major shock to use 2007 after 2003. Nothing is where it is supposed to be and this whole icon approach rather than drop down menus had to grow on me. Anywho, once you get used to it, the docs you do are simply amazing. Don't worry about compatibility because 2007 is backward compatible with the rest. I use Office 2007 Ultimate.I do not tend to name my Office versions according to the OS. I use their Microsoft distributed names.

    0. Office 97
    1. Office 2000
    2. Office XP
    3. Office 2003
    4. Office 2007
    5. Office 2008 ->Office 2007 for Mac.

    Turning now to the installer part, it is very easy. What I advise is to install any office version after a clean os install. Speaking of Office 2007, you should not worry. Slip in the DVD, choose default if you are not comfortable but I always choose custom. I like to know what I install. Let the installer finish, reboot if asked, if not, open windows update, download and install the available service pack and you are finished.

    Regarding the price, you need to see which one you want. You mention publisher so your choice is a bit limited towards the more expensive side :(.

    that's a lot of change for something you can do using free open-source software.
    Abiword, and openoffice.org are both free and just as easy to use as Office, plus it saves "office" files.

    as far as the other one,
    just type "publisher" + open source alternative into google.

    You'll find programs that might suit your needs just as well. IF it doesn't you can always buy the program later.

    for the record it will almost always be cheaper to buy software yourself and install it then to have dell do it for you.

    both ways (opensource and closed source) it's as simple as clicking the .exe file and following the install wizard which pops up.
