I am torn between a Vostro and a 1520, the Vostro would be cheaper but I would have to order 2 G off of NewEgg. My question is how hard is it exactly to install? I dont know how to and dont want to mess anything up. Is it worth it for me to just get the 1520?

There's two slots for RAM; one on the back that is incredibly easy to install and one under, yes under, the keyboard, which can be very hard to install for someone who doesn't have much experience (I.E.: ME). I didn't want to screw around with the RAM under the keyboard and lose dual-channel RAM by just replacing one, so I "got ripped off"(their words) by getting the 2 Gigs from Dell, which is fine for me as it's like the equivalent of paying $100 for the RAM and then $50 for the proffesional installation.

Actually, the price difference is greater than you have stated because 2GB of RAM costs ~70 bux these day and plus you can also sell your current 1GB on Ebay. So it is more like $100 for professional installation and warranty through Dell. However, all the RAM chips purchased from online source have a lifetime warranty.

You can get a single stick of 2 gigs of RAM for ~$70? Please do tell!

He was talking about a 2x1gb kit for a dual channel setup.

Note that the memory slots for the Inspiron 1420 and Vostro 1400 are found on the back

i got mine for $50 after shipping and tax. can't imagine why you would use a single stick 2gb, go crazy and get 4gb none of the preinstalled OS on the Dells can support the whole 4gb, and leave one of the 512mb stick in there you get some weird mix
    its 2*1GB Crucial PC2-5300.
