I got the Inspiron 9100 before I realized how bad the battery life is and how there is a lack of power adapters, so i think that I am going to exchange it with the 8600 which has a lot more battery life, and I can buy mobile adapters for. Does anyone know how this process is going to work?

You have 21 days to return your 9100. I would call Dell to make sure you are within that time frame. You can then order another laptop. I'm not sure if Dell allows for exchanges in that 21 day period. You might want to call their customer service.
