The e1705 is one of 3 laptops I am looking at
    due to price
and the nvidia 7900gs card that is in it
from what I have gathered from these forums is the build quality is good for a dell laptop.
    but to the questions

    1. Is the palm area painted? due to be used all the time dont want it to wear off
    2. Do anyone use this on there lap? I mean I am used to carrying my daughter around and shes around 20lbs now so not so much weight does it get to hot to be on a lap
    3. Any major problems with it? nervouse cause I am coming from a thinkpad but this laptop perked my interest
    thank you
    Michael

Well I don't have the E1705, but i have the sister to it.

1.) no it is not painted. As for wearing off, that depends on how you type. Mine has alot of scratches from my watch and little discolor, but nothing really noticeable.

2.) yes. The laptop weighs about 8 pounds, and the only real problem with it is the heat. You'll get a lot of heat from the memory area and your video card area

3.)Not to my knowledge. Just be careful about your pricing - I wouldn't spend anything over 2000 for it.

The 9300 paint job will get a lot of scratches. the 9400 i don't think so unless u you use sharp objects to scratch it. I accidentally did on mine. Undernormal use, scratches is not a problem.

If your palms /wrist gets sweaty during type, the palm rest paint will turn to pink color .

Coming from a thinkpad, the major change wll be the weight and the size of this thing.
Do buy with an appropriate CC to get an extra year of warranty :D (see my sig)

A lot of people mention the heat, but it doesn't seem that bad to me. I ran about 40 minutes of 3dmark and pcmark benchmarks yesterday with it on my lap and it was warm but not uncomfortable. I hold mine with the back corners on my knees and legs a little apart so there's still airflow underneath the system. It's getting cold out, think of it as a little portable heater with a built in computer :)

I can't speak to problems since mine is new. Haven't read too much bad stuff about it except the ever-present debate about which monitor is the best.
