    Hi folks,

I am planning to buy a 9300 WUXGA, but i have been concerned with all the talk over sparkle and leaking issues. I used to have a sony 16" (1600x1200) laptop and the screen was excellent. Unfortunately though the lcd screen didnt last long (less than 4 years!!!). Anyway, this time I have decided to go for a Dell and I particularly wanted the 17" wuxga screen.

So any of you out there who have recently purchased a 9300 (or xps) wuxga, could you kindly comment on the screen quality, specially in terms of leakage and sparkes etc...? Also, since i have never owned a Dell, how does their build quality compare to those of other manufacturers such as sony.

I could order one and send it back if i am not happy with it. but here in canada dell charges a 15% restocking fee.

Also is it possible to get coupon discounts in canada?

    Thanks in advance.

I have heard too many comments on the "sparkle effect" issue to negate it, but in my own experience, there is absolutely no problem with my screen; it is bright, clear, and there is no leakage. I had ordered my I9300 before they started shipping them back in March and the screen is the same as the day I bought it. As far as the build quality is concerned, I
am not saying it is bad, but there are better built laptops out there. I guess you can't expect the best when you save so much over other manufacturers. Just click the I9300 link to check out other opinions.

I think someone posted a picture with light leakage on here a while back. Might want to search for that or google it. It usually appears when the screen is black.

In regards to the "sparkle" question, I have a matte screen wxga on my 9300 its a samsung panel model x4766. The screen has a transparent, patterned sheen from th eanti reflective coating. LG owners regard their anti reflective coating as having a metallic/dusty sheen. I wouldnt say that my screen "sparkles" though clearly it is an LCD screen and looks like one.

As for light leakage, you will have this on any LCD panel especially on a laptop. Lg users report less light leakage than samsungs, my samsung had alot of light leakage at first but this has dissipated with time and use over a month. advantages of the samsungs are the brighter colors, less blue tint than the lgs and much better viewing angles. Users of both panels report they like them, equally as many users report that they dont.

If you have concerns about the screen, what you should do is go and look at a screen for yourself and decide. Each person has a different reaction to the screen, so you should check for yourself and make your own decision. If you are one of those lucky people that have a Dell store in your area, you can go and check it out, but if you don't, do not be worried this is another option. You can go to a place like Best Buy or Circuit City, where they sell computers like the HP z8000, because the bright screen option on the z8000 is similar to the wuxga screen on the i9300. Best of luck in making you decision.

I have the wuxga on my 9300 but I do not know what panel I have. I don't have any significant problem with "sparkles." There is a slight shimmering with bright whites, but I don't see what the huge complaint is about. It is very minimal. For the increased resolution, I am happy with it.
However, the screen is not as bright as the Sony which I have seen in the stores. That is my complaint. But since I got my 9300 for less than half the price of the Sony, with similar specs, I really can't complain much at all. For the money, the 9300 with Wuxga and the nvidia card is a great deal...of course I did use the 40% off coupon......

Thanks for all the replys so far.

Here in Vancouver there isnt a Dell store to check out. And as i mentioned before, Dell Canada charges a 15% restocking fee for any returns.

Could you folks also comment on the build quality and the sturdiness of the unit please? I know its made out of Magnisium alloy which should be strong. But I have heard comments suggesting that Dell's are cheaper because they are not built as well as other brands.

    Thanks.
