I just bought an HP dv2000t, after debating between that and the Vostro.

Everything is great with the HP, with one exception: the heat of the hard drive. Its hovering around 49-50 degrees Celsius. Thats not really all that bad, but the heat comes right through the case and makes your left leg hot if it is on your lap, which is where I use it 99% of the time. I didn't have this problem with my old Gateway notebook.

So for the Vostro 1400 owners, how hot does your notebook get, and is it noticeable on your lap? Running cool is one of the most important things for me in a laptop, and I want to get the best one possible. Thanks!

Also, as a follow up question: I was looking at the Vostro 1400 manual on the Dell website. It looks like the fan for the CPU is on the bottom of the case. So doesn't this present a problem when its sitting on your lap? Doesn't the fan get blocked?

i'm on it right now.. its quite cool, much cooler than its HP counter part. the HD is located a bit further from the palm rests so its not so bad. at worst it gets mildly warm. but never hot.

Thanks for the response Goren...My HP is only a little warm on the palm rest...it's the heat on the bottom that really bugs me. How is the heat on the vostro on the bottom of the notebook?

^I'll tell you later when I get home. I'm at work right now and this place has full AC so I can't really tell the heat.
but at the moment its very minimal.

ive had mine on for about 12 hours now...as long as you situate the fan between your legs or so your leg isnt blocking it it keeps the 1400 pretty cool...sometimes the fan blows out cold air...which i think is kinda weird...but still way better than a hot lappy
