well I found the dell restore/ or ultility partition is very useful when it come to restore your system-- not only to the factory image, but also to a image that created by yourself from the complete pc backup.

my friend kindly lend his HDD to me , which works great on my M1330. Now the problem is I want to keep that to myself, cloning that to my HDD. however the two HDD are differnet in size. does anyone have the knoledge of doing that|? I dont mind the data or system partition, but I like the ultility partition.

I guess that ultility partition is the same partition used for mediadirect. am I right here?

ok...first let's show you how the paritions are laid out (at least on my inspiron...hopefully the same)

    default/factory:
    -------------------|----------|----------|(IN EXTENDED PARTITION|
    DELL DAIGNOSTICS |RESTORE-|VISTA-----|MEDIA DRIECT----------|

    ....
if you want to backup the restore parition, the best way i see is to go and use partimage, a opensource partition imager/backup/compresser.

partimage can backup the partitions, including the data, type? does that mean i have to have a disk bigger than the orignal one to backup it?

partimage only backs up one partition, it takes the partition and pulls the blank space out, and only writes to an image the data and the partition type. The other parition to be written to needs to be of the same size as the original (or larger)
