I've never owned a Dell laptop before and after some bad experiences with HP (two defective computers in a month), I'm ready to make the switch.
Can a 1720 owner(s) answer some questions for me:
1. Are the RAM modules located on the bottom of the laptop. I'd get the bare minimum so I can upgrade it myself but my current laptop has a RAM module underneath the keyboard so I would like to avoid that.
2. Even if I don't get a 2nd HDD right now, do I still get an empty bay on the bottom of the laptop to add a 2nd one in the future?
3. How is the noise and heat? I would love a quiet and cool notebook like the DV9700T I had to return.
3. Is the 1920x1200 res okay for Web browsing and typing documents or is it better for people who want to watch movies?
4. How is the keyboard? It's full size right? I like a solid keyboard but don't know what Dells are like.
5. I love the blackness of the keyboard and the black around the screen on the HP DV9700T. I see the silver of the Inspiron and wonder if I would like it. What are your thoughts?
6. Do you have this computer and are you happy? Or do you have a Dell that you are happy with?

not exactly the 1720 but there are detailed instructions on changing ram modules on this site:

it may be similar to the 1500 series -
1. One module (B) is at the bottom, the other (A) is under the keyboard. Shouldn't be too difficult to remove though.
2. Yes, you get 2 bays. You should order the following 2 components with your system: Dell part number XK231 and C7586. You'll need some small screws for the HDD and the caddy, but they cost a bundle at Dell, so you can hopefully salvage them from somewhere. Search the forums for these part numbers. I've even seen (maybe not here) a photo-guide to installing a 2nd HDD. Google for the P/N's.
3. No complaints. I'm using RMClock. NHC is reportedly quite good too.
3. (Yea, the "other" 3) 1920x1200 is fabulous for everything! Go for it!
4. Full size, nice tactile feel and all. My only complaint is that the Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn buttons are in a single line above the numeric keypad, so they are not very accessible, and these are the keys I like and use a lot. I got an external BT keyboard/mouse combo so it's fine (Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5000 Laser).
5. Well... I have the Vostro 1700, which is the exact same thing as the Inspiron 1720, except that Vostro is all black, which is exactly what I like. It doesn't look "flashy" nice like some Asus notebooks, but it looks nice and clean and "professional". I was ready to get a 1720 but the Vostro came out cheaper with the same or very similar specs, so check what price you can get. It doesn't matter that it's a business model, use any business name, Dell doesn't care.
6. I'm quite happy. Just finished (almost) doing a clean XP install, and everything seems nice, fast, and smooth (knock on wood). Alternative models I liked were roughly twice as expensive, so for me, it was a no-brainer.
Hope this helps! -
Yep, you're right -- the "other 3." I promise I can count higher than 6 even without using a second 3.
I was looking at the Vostro because I like the all black too. The Inspiron has a $400 off coupon right now and I can't find anything similar for the Vostro so it's pricing out more than the Inspiron will be.
I appreciate the help on this. I'm off to Wal Mart tomorrow to see if they have any Dells in stock so I can have a look in person. We don't have any other Dell places in this city so it's my only shot to see one.
