    Hi,

Yesterday I tried to hook up my 5.1 Home Entertainment Speaker System with subwoofer to my Vostro. I put the jack in to the input next to the microphone slot. I was guessing that was the right one to use anyway. I got a pop up saying that it had recognised an input and gave me a few options: Line-in, some kind of set-up thing that brought up a useless screen, and a couple of other weird options. Anyway, the sound still came through the laptop.

Will i be able to use these speakers with it? They never required software installing on my desktop PC.

Secondly, if I were to wish to use a headset for gaming, how would i override the webcam microphone as that will pic up too much computer sound?

    Thanks,

    Leeds Leeds Leeds.

I don't think you can get 5.1 by using the headphone jack. Headphone jacks only allow for two channels, left and right.

you got a pop up...? On what? The Vostro screen?

Also, if you plug a mic in the mic port it should disable the built in mic...

Even if the internal mic doesnt disable automatically, most softwares will give you a choice of which mic you want to use, if it detects more than one. Just make sure you choose your headset. For this to work, you probably need to have a better quality/USB headset. I'm not sure if it will give you the choice if you are using a cheap headset plugged into the mic jack.

I know on mine when I plug something into the mic jack a window comes up asking me what I want to do with it and you can choose line in or surround speakers... I don't have it with me right now but i don't think you can assign it to be a sub, only surrounds or mic...
