Does upgrading or replacing the HDD, RAM, or CPU void the warranty? (I know that changing the motherboard does. :p Oops.) I tried reading through the warranty terms and conditions but I couldn't find anything that was very clear on the subject. Thanks. :)

Installing your own RAM will not void the warranty..Dell will just not cover that RAM under the their warranty..you would have to contact the mfg. of it. ;) That would be the same for the HDD, also..User Upgrade...

I know there was someplace I saw it on Dell's website, it had a little chart of components, and which could be replaced by the user. If I recall, it was everything but the heatsink/CPU. Let me try and dig up that link.

    EDIT - Aha! Found it.

It's not very comprehensive (only mentions Latitude, Vostro and Precision laptops), but since the listings for those three are identical, I'd say it's safe to use it as a guideline for other Dell notebooks as well.

That's a nice find Mastershroom. Interestingly enough, I've had a rep tell me that the LCD on a Latitude was replaceable without voiding the warranty, but you know how it is with reps...

At any rate, while many of these parts are user replaceable without voiding the warranty, you might have to keep the original parts such that you can return the machine to its factory specifications if anything goes wrong.

Thanks for that! :) I had seen that before but never put much thought into what it was for since the Studio or Inspiron models aren't listed. I didn't know that the CPU wasn't replaceable, maybe it doesn't apply to other models since some are easier to access than others. Dell should be more clear on this. :p

Yeah....I was afraid of that, lol. I normally like to buy a new processor or ram, etc, then sell the old one to make up for some of the costs. I guess I'll have to convince my cousin to spend money without planning on getting some back. She wants to upgrade from her T5800. :)
