The PM965/GM965 chipset in the 1720 is capable of handling the 2.8GHz X9000 processor. But it's pointless as you don't have access to the OCing (Overclocking) options in the BIOS - and the 200Mhz increase from the T9500 isn't much to justify the performance gain. Heat is not a problem though.

The processors I highly recommend for most users are the T9300 @ 2.5GHz and the T9500 @ 2.6GHz, currently, the one I highly recommend is the T9300. However if you could get a price of the T9500 the same with a T9300, then go for it. They can be found on ebay. Search around.

Other stuff that you can upgrade is RAM to 6GB max - unless you're doing stuff like running multiple OSes and photoshopping work, 4GB is enough optimum. (see sig below)

thanks for the replies im about to upgrade from a 32 bit to a 64 bit version of vista with t7500 as my current processors, do i have to do anything special with my processors before i can upgrade? I know that overclocking in a laptop is not recommended but i want to experiment and am capable of watching my laptop's temp what software would you or anyone recommend for processor OCing?
Is this compatible with my chipset?

i noticed you had six gigs so i figured that 2gb limit is a myth for one of the channels.

The T7500 is 64bit capable, so you should have no problems installing Vista 64 on it. I don't think there are any Core 2 Duos that aren't 64bit capable. As for overclocking, it's not just a matter of should or shouldn't; you can't overclock the 1720. HWMonitor is nonetheless a good program for monitoring your temps.

The memory you've linked is desktop memory. It will not work in the 1720. You are looking for DDR2 laptop memory; any speed will work. The official memory limit is 4GB, but as mentioned, people have gotten up to 6GB.

LOL, I wouldn't even bother about OCing the CPU at all. Absolutely no way. Not even SetFSB.
