I recently purchased a cheap Studio 1537 for a friend with the crappy 1280x800 resolution screen. Are there any known driver hacks, etc. that can be used to upgrade that without laying down the extra $150 cash? Cheers.

No it is a hardware setting and whichever resolution you purchase is what you will always have.
