Im thinking about buying a 1705 from dell. Ive seen many ppl posting that one should upgrade the memory on their own since its cheaper. My question is, which memery modules are compatible with dells 1705?

    DDR2 533 or 667.

AKA PC2 4200 or PC2 5300. I have 2gb of PC2 4200 in my SZ. Benchmarks online and real world experience seem to indicate no difference between the two except price.

It's not the brand, it's the type of memory. However, I always steer clear of no name types and stick with big names like Crucial, Kingston, etc. Most memory manufacturer websites have some sort of tool that lists compatible memory modules for your computer. Stick with those tools and you will always get the right memory.

    yes.

its also helpful to read the reviews at newegg, many folks include what they used the memory on.

I used Mushkin in my SZ, and it's essentially the same (core duo) as a 1705. OCZ works well too.

The key is the standard, not the brand. Like any standard (IDE, SATA, PCI, etc) compatibility is guaranteed (in most cases) by the standard, quality is not.

I'm probably going to be getting a 1705 and will put the mushkin from my SZ in it. I fully expect it to work fine because it is the same standard.

Not really.. just price it seems.. and maybe a unnoticeably boost in process accessing.. but nothing youd notice.
