If I were to re-install windows (without buying the recovery disk from dell),
I could use one of my own from my desktops right?

I don't need one specifically from dell... correct?

Also, will dell send me a seperate CD with the drivers for the Notebook on it?
And is "Media Direct" on this CD at all?

A Win XP is a Win XP CD no matter what, correct?
I have two disks... 1 XP home and 1 XP OEM

    thanks for your time.

    PS - Inspiron 6400, if you're wondering =p

EDIT - Just saw the reformat post, I appologize for not posting there.

You could use a different CD as long as you had a valid unused product key to go with it...the disk from Dell isn't quite the same as your disk from your desktop. Dell would send you a CD with drivers on it if you wanted, but I would suggest just downloading them yourself from their support site - you'll get ones that are more up to date that way anyway. Media Direct is a whole different thing - there are a bunch of threads with info on it around here, but basically it's located on it's own partition on the hard drive, and can be fairly easily repaired with the "recovery tool" offered on the drivers and downloads page.
