I have a Dell Inspiron 9300, about 4 years old. I bought it with 1 gb RAM, and I'd like to extend the life of it by a few months, and make it a little faster.

This is the RAM that dell recommends for my laptop to upgrade:

Unfortunately, looking at my order when I first got the laptop, it says this:

    2 Y5522 Dual In-line Memory Module 512MB, 533, 64X64, 8K, 200

So I'm assuming that my laptop came with 2x512mb sticks, so upgrading one to 1gb will only give me 1.5gb.

Will this RAM work? It's 27 bucks for two, instead of 40 that I'd have to pay with dell for 2.

Also, will I actually notice a big performance upgrade going from 1gb to 2?
    Thanks!

That RAM should work just fine. I assume your system uses Windows XP...you probably won't get a whole lot of performance out of 2GB of RAM, although multitasking will be a bit easier.

The difference being that the one Dell is recommending is slightly faster at 800MHz rather than 667MHz of the one you found on Amazon. However, on your machine I believe the faster RAM cannot be utilised at the maximum speed anyway - although it would still work.

With regards to performance benefits; Mastershroom says as you are running XP it probably wont show a massive improvement in terms of speed, but I disagree completely. Your choice of operating system has a large impact, but if you often use memory hungry programs then that is when you will notice the difference, regardless of which operating system you use. I do however strongly agree that if you multi task a lot then you will also notice probably a big change; but again it depends on which programs you run in tandem as to whether a performance gain will be seen.

It is one of the easiest, and at the moment pretty much the cheapest upgrade you can buy for your laptop; and a good choice in my opinion. Hope it arrives promptly and you are happy with your purchase.
