There is a sub on the bottom, so at least 3.

2 speakers and a Sub. If it had any more than that they would definitely advertise as 4.1, 5.1, 6.1 etc.

    True.

Note, though, that the M1210 has the same speaker setup, though the sound card is 7.1... (the only 7.1 card on any Dell laptop, I think)

7.1 for the audio out... and don't expect that through the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Well, you need to use all three audio jacks on the M1210 to get 7.1:

I would assume you would need to use the S/PDIF digital audio out to acheive 7.1 seperate channels of sound. Besides, the middle jack in that picture is for a microphone ;)

All I was saying is that there are not 7 speakers on the notebook itself despite it's ability to produce sound in 7.1.

Mini is right about the jacks. I have had other systems that do the same thing. The microphone is high jacked for the 7.1

Yes, exactly. It's described in the M1210 manual, p.68:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1210/en/om/PF362A03.pdf

But, this does not apply to the M1710 in any case. And it still only has 2 speakers + sub.
