    Dell says that this notebook can accept up to 2GB. Is that because that was what was available at the time or is that actual limit? What would happen if I installed a 4GB module? Would it work at all or perhaps only recognize 2 of the 4GB?

    The E1505 uses the 945PM chipset, so it only supports 2GB RAM (chipset limitation). Installing any more would be useless.

    The 945PM chipset can use up to 4GB. However, you'll only see at most 3.5GB no matter what OS you install on it. The 960GL chipset is the only one from that generation that was limited to 2GB.
