Hi, I'm new to the forums. I just got this computer (dell studio 1737) from a friend. He also gave me some ram cards that he had for it, but it doesn't work. What i've heard and read by looking around is that the mother board can't take more than 4gb, but others have had success with 8gbs. The default ram that i have in it right now are 2 x 2gb cards totalling to 4gb RAM. I was curious if i could stick in one of these 8gb cards? The two cards i have sitting around are 8gb each (they say 2x4gb on them). Would it be better to have a single 8gb card vs a the dual channel stuff with 2x2gb cards

If 1x 8GB doesn't work, have you tried 2x 4GB? You can usually exceed the official RAM spec on these machines (but obviously, there is no guarantee, that's why there's an official spec), so on one hand, you might be able to use 8GB, but on the other, the machine might just not like 8GB DIMMs.
