it depends on whether or not your chipset supports it.

according to intel.com, the intel 915 GM/PM supports both 400 and 533 mhz, so you should be fine if this is the chipset you have. dell.com says that the i6000 uses this one, so should be fine.

I recently purchased my I6000 as well. I upgraded the memory from 256MB (400MHz) to 512MB (533MHz) two weeks ago, and there has been no problem at all. I noticed that the net surfing speed is faster and comparable to my P4 2.5GHz desktop (with memory of 512MB). The memory I purchased is from newegg.com with Mfg. Part No: KVR533D2S4512. It is Kingston, DDR2, 533MHz, and 200pin. Now it shows the price is $62.14. When I purchased a little more than two week ago, it was $65. Unfortunately, the newegg.com site is down now, and I am able to give you the link.
