No, upgrading your RAM does not void your warranty as long as you don't damage any component during the process.

Hi. I asked a Dell tech here in Germany about the same thing and he told me that it would not void the warranty as upgrading the ram is a procedure allowed by the customer to be done. Dunno, but there is a section about upgrading ram in my instruction manual, so perhaps everything that shows up in the manual regarding the repairs is allowed for the customer to do it by himself.
Wouldn't be bad though if someone from the US would confirm the warranty situation because in the end specific countries might have different warranty policies...

Dell can't force you to use only their RAM as a condition of maintaining your warranty any more than GM can threaten to void your warranty for putting in a non-Delco oil filter. In fact, GM tried to do this very thing years and years ago (owner used a non-Delco oil filter, and GM tried to disclaim the warranty as a result), and was sued over it. GM lost.

Just remember to take your RAM out before sending the machine to Dell!

I've heard horror stories where they've returned the machines with the original RAM configuration and "stealing" your upgrade. Might not be a policy or intention as much as forgetfulness on an employee's part (like I had Dell once send my back my laptop with RAM when I had always sent it in without), but either way I'd not like to loose my upgrade and have to buy it again (as you'd have a tough time proving that you sent it in with the RAM in it and yada yada).

Sometimes servicing a laptop includes changing the RAM for a more consistent diagnosis. I agree with replacing your upgrades with the originals before sending it for repairs.
