I recently purchased a Dell XPS M140 with the standard config. of 2x256 MB RAM; I figured I could probably save a few bucks by purchasing the memory myself.
However, I found out that to replace one of the RAM modules, the keyboard and hinge cover have to be removed (I know, I know, everyone claims that it's super-easy). I'd rather not bother with that...
So here's my question: What do I have to lose by putting in a 1024MB module in the easily accessible slot and leaving the 256MB module where it is?

It is pretty easy to remove the keyboard, http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps140m/en/sm/keyboard.htm#wp1122228
And then to put the Memory in that is under the keyboard:

Trust me, it is easy todo
If you dont want to still, there is no problem having a 256MB stick, and a 1024MB stick. Only thing with that is, it wont be in Dual Channel mode, rather just Single Channel. You need 2 of the same size RAM in order to have Dual channel. -
Are the benefits of Dual channel mode that great? (I have no idea, obviously!)
The advantage of having a 1gig stick is that I only have to get rid of one 256mb stick.
Edited to add: More specifically, is it better to have 1 Gig in dual channel or 1280MB in single channel? -
You probably won't notice any major difference between running Dual channel versus single channel. It might help if you are a hard core gamer, then it would be best to do 2gb.
If you aren't a gamer, for everyday normal tasks, you won't need 2gb, so 1024 stick should do you good. That's what I've done with mine. I have a 1gb + 256, and I never max out on memory.

RAM: 256MB + 1024MB = Problem?
