Would there be any reason i couldn't install 2 gb ram in my Dell E1705. I ordered 2 1gb pc4200 533mhz (gigaram brand) sticks from newegg and they both won't install. the computer recognized one being installed along with the factory 256, but when i put in both and try starting up the computer it waits like 3 seconds and then shuts off.

Sounds like a problem there. Did you try both sticks invidually with the 256MB stick? Maybe one of them is bad.

If the RAM is bad it might not boot up the computer. What brand did you buy?

yes both work with the 256 stick, and both work by themselves in each different slot. dont know what the issue could be. the brand is Gigaram.

I have heard Gigaram is not that good. If you ordered from Newegg call or e-mail to see if you can exchange it. The Transcend RAM is great. I know alot of people that have it and are working fine with it.

Personally I would get the Transcend.

ok heres another thing. when i look in the BIOS with the 1 gb installed, it says correctly that installed memory is 1024, but that available memory is 1023. maybe it feels it has too much memory installed with both sticks. the reviews on newegg said it was okay, and i didnt think it would make a whole lot of difference. could this be an issue with the computer and not the ram? because both sticks work independently.

I doubt it...actually some RAM is incompatable with some comps. Which is kind of weird. I know for a fact that the Transcend works. Like I said I don't know about the Gigaram isn't very good quality.

I received 2gb of Gigaram memory from Newegg today, and basically this is what happens: each stick works by itself, each works with the original 256 in the laptop, but they do not work together. i tried installing them one by one and this did not work either. when 1 gb is installed, the bios correctly states that 1024 mb is installed, however it says that only 1023mb is available. does anybody know why this is or think this could be the cause to the issue? does anybody else notice the wrong amount of memory available in their bios?

    dduany13,

    Please do not cross-post.

I have moved your thread from the hardware section and combined the posts. Since this is more of a Dell specific question I will leave it in this forum.

I had gigaram on my desktop and when I installed it my pc wouldnt boot. It would just stay blank. Once I switched it, it started right up. Moral of the story is that Gigaram is no good.

I have been reading on the net and I get the samething. They have alot of "bad batches" which I think it is just bad ram all together. Thanks for the info. :)

RMA'd the gigaram ram from newegg, and ordered just 2 x 512mb transcend ram. Hopefully this works out.

Well it works great for me. My I9300 came with Samsung RAM to begin with so I figured I was good to go.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

just to answer your other question -- it's normal for the E1705 to show that it's using 1023mb when 1024mb is installed. It dedicates 1mb to some unknown process... or something along those lines...

Yes, that 1MB is being used by the computer to keep up windows and stuff....it actually uses more than that, but yes, that is correct.
