I finally did it, bought an Inspiron E1705 w/ nvidia 9600 GS, truebrite screen, 1 GB ram, etc. I also bought 2Gigs of ram from Crucial that I will be installing the sec that puppy arrives. I've installed ram on desktop/tower boxes before, it's pretty **** easy. I've yet to attempt this on a lapper and was wondering if it's something I should do myself, or take to a service shop to do. Any suggestions/help/pointers would be great.

You can do it yourself. Most of us do. It is really easy - just remember not to force it. You can find your laptop manual at support.dell.com under manuals and it will give you instructions on what to do.

It takes less than a minute to do - it is just that easy.

I just upgraded my E15050 from 1G/533 to 2G/667. Review the manual first to familiarize yourself with the parts. Get a clean area and unplug the laptop and remove the battery. Press and hold the power switch for a few seconds to discharge any remaining power. Use a ground strap or touch some ground bare metal to ensure that you arn't holding any static. You want to handle the memory chips as little as possible, so try to have everything ready. If there is dust on the bottom use some canned air to clean it. Remove the cover and replace the chips one at a time. I suggest to put the old one into the package that the new chip came in. When installing, be careful, don't force it. Use about a 45 degree angle, you will feel it when it snaps into place. Once everything is back together, boot up. You may get an error message saying that the system has been changed - just ignore it. Then once you are fully booted up, check your system properties and you should see your new memory amount.
