Hi guys. Gotta a sound problem with the m1730 that seems to be coming from the laptop and not the soundcard or speakers.
Every 2 minutes when playing something back in Cubase or just watching a movie, I get these crackling noises that last about 4 seconds. They distort the sound and then vanish again. I bought an external M-Audio audiointerface because I want to be able to record music but still I get these noises.
    Can anyone help?

To paraphrase a great writer "Reformatting is the last resort of the incompetent".

Is your M-Audio card connected via FireWire, by any chance? There are apparently some issues regarding the FireWire interface on many Dell laptops.

If it's USB, you might try downloading the latest chipset drivers from Intel. My apologies but I can't remember the exact chipset version number you need to look for (Ifti, your input appreciated here!). If that doesn't work, and this is probably a stupid question, are you using ASIO drivers from within CuBase? If you're using MME or DirectX, increase the size of the buffers you are using.

That the problem occurrs whilst watching movies is a bit mystifying. Does the M-Audio software let you set overall preferences for buffer size? The issue you describe sounds exactly (pardon the pun) like too-small buffers.

Do you happen to have the "Andrea ST Filter Service" service running? If you do, stop the service and do your tests. This is a service that enables "noise cancelation" on the microphones but it's also found to be the cause of some crackling noise on the i1720. I don't know if it's the case for the M1730 as well.

Its a firewire interface but I have had these problems before getting it. So i'm thinking its got something to do with my computer. Could there be a process running that suddenly takes up a lot of power?
I've tried playing with the buffersize and with no luck, and yes its the updated ASIO driver from Cubase' website.

Steinberg dont provide ASIO drivers - the card manufacturer does, in your case M-Audio.
