I'm trying to reinstall vista, it seems to get stuck on the 'completing the installation' section.
Firstly, does anyone know the average time that this part takes (incase i'm not actually stuck, and it just takes really long.)

Thanks, but that doesn't really help me, i've realised that it wasn't being stuck and that it just takes some time, however now i'm at a black screen with just a curser, is this a normal stage? I wouldn't want to turn off and loose all my progress.

I don't believe this is normal. It (the black screen w/cursor) didn't happen to me any one of the times I did a clean install on my 1520. I used the exact same steps as flamenko's guide (but I didn't use the guide itself ) and the black screen you're talking about didn't happen. Or maybe it appeared, but for no more than a few seconds. If something is hanging for a few minutes like that, Vista might not have installed correctly.

I wouldn't worry about having to install Vista again, because the reinstall itself really doesn't take that long (especially since you haven't installed the drivers yet).

It did it again, after roughly an hour of installing.
I tried booting it up and left it for 15-20 minutes, but it wouldn't work.
Going to try downloading an ISO of vista, then see if i can't install it through that.

Weird. Are you using the Vista reinstall disks that Dell sent? This shouldn't be happening.

For me, it takes up to 30min to install Vista.

Have you tried calling Dell for replacement disks?

I was using the one that dell gave me.

Tried it with the ISO of Vista Home Premium, that kind of worked (gave me the BSOD), put in the driver disk; couldn't work out what to do.
However, it seems i fluked my way through, and i must have installed the drivers i needed to by mistake or something, it's working perfectly now.

I didn't have any bloatware on my 1720?

You tried providing the AHCI drivers during install?

    Hello,

I'm experiencing numerous errors and bugs with my new Vista Dell 1720, and I'd like to do a re-installation of Vista, but will I lose all of the bloatware that was installed by default when I received my laptop? First, is it true you automatically lose all the bloatware and of course the programs you installed when you re-install the OS? Can I choose not to lose everything during the Vista re-installation process?

    Thanks for your help.
