Here is a way to save yourself about $150 on a new dell 1520. When you configure your 1520 go to the cheaper $819 model, not the $919 model. When you are done, you will save about $150 or so off what you would spend on the same model configured from the $919 option! Check it out if you are thinking about pulling the trigger. I tried this with a number of different configurations, so I think it might work for a lot of different option selections. Here is an example- also make sure to use the current $300 coupon.

CONFIGURED UNDER THE $819 OPTION= $1302 BEFORE TAX AND SHIPPING WITH $300 COUPON
CONFIGURED UNDER THE $919 OPTION= $1461 BEFORE TAX AND SHIPPING WITH $300 COUPON!!!
Enjoy!
EDIT:
The above configurations are differ in their the warranty- the $1302 model has a 1 year mail in, and the $1461 has a 1 year with mail in and 24x7 phone support. If you add the phone support to the $1302 model, it increases the price to $1372- still a savings over the EXACT SAME computer configured from the $819 base model instead of the $919. Worth the $90, I think. Also, this works with lots of configurations, so don't be afraid to give it a try if you want a slightly different model.

I'm not sure if I'll use the config but Just comin out to say thanks for takin the time

I know that's how I used my $300 coupon. Ends up being much cheaper since you can a la carte the warranty.
-
I ordered a 1520 (almost identical config to yours) on 8/2 and came across the same thing. The only difference that I noticed was the warranty. The cheaper version has "1Yr Ltd Warranty and Mail-In Service" whereas the more expensive version has 1 year 24x7 with phone support. I don't know what the exact difference is, but from the sounds of it the cheaper model does have a year warranty but doesn't have on-site or phone support.
I ended up going with the cheaper version. I figured that if I ever absolutely had to HAVE phone support, the $150 saved should more than adequately pay for it. -
You are right- the warranty is part of it! Good catch. Now, I redid it and the cheaper option comes out to;
$1372
with the same warranty and specs as the more expensive option which still comes out to;
$1461
So it still saves you some bucks, I think. -
yea...why all caps? makes it look like a scam.
-
This applies to the Inspiron 1720 as well... It can actually save you almost $200. However, the "free" 2GB RAM and the 160GB HD are not going to be available after tonight, but maybe there will be some new deal coming out...
-
Whoops. The all caps does make it look like a scam, so I changed it. I just want people to know how to get a better price without going through the dell site 100 times like I did. This was the cheapest way I found to get a 1520. Anybody else found glitches like this? I think this subject would make a great thread on its own- the 'dell glitch deal' thread. Booyah!
-
The OP is right. But I had assumed this was common knowledge. But if it isnt, then it is great that someone reminded everyone.
I noticed this effect (starting with the cheapest system) back when I ordered on 7/7 -
This may be common knowledge for the advanced user, but a noob like myself had to figure it out the 'hard' way, and forums are for helping us noobs, among other things! Do you guys think a 'dell glitch' thread would be cool? I have heard that occasionally there is a whopper of a deal (way better than this) when dell screws up. It would be sweet to get the word out on that type of glitch so we can pounce on it before dell fixes it. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than myself could start it.
Word. -
the mail-in warranty also includes phone support
-
Then why on earth would anyone spend the extra money? I guess that's how dell screws the noobs? It just goes to show that a little extra digging is well worth it when buying a dell. I'm not sure if they could have made configuring a computer any more of a pain in the ass.

either way the deals on the vostro's last week was much better than these ill stay with my vostro..
-
The deal you have listed is great. When I priced the vostros, they were more expensive and lesser-equipped than the inspirons with a better configuration (when you count a coupon of about 300 bucks on the inspiron). I could not find vostros with as high LCD resolution as the inspiron or a 7200 rpm drive. In spite of this, the vostro was pricier than the inspiron even when it didn't have as good a config (less monitor resolution and slower hard drive). Although the vostro has XP as an option. That would be nice. Your deal rocks! Congrats!

Someone help!!! I just configured this, and I'm over $1500. Why is this? I built everything to the exact specs that you have listed.
-
OP, very nice. Thank you for taking the time to inform those who did not know that. I'd rep you but I'm out for today. :/
