I had called dell months back ago to request a Vista Premium DVD because it wasn't included with my Vostro 1400. They sent it the following day. Today I recieved a package on my mailbox...lo and behold... it was ANOTHER Vista Premium DVD with a letter from Dell apologizing for not having it included with my initial shipment.

    Sweeeet. :D

Did the second one come with a new COA sticker? If not it's nice to have backups but all dell OS CDs are exactly the same (ie you can take your premium cd, load it up on your neighbors newish dell computer and it will install and everything just fine, no real need for 2).

*Shrugs* Happens with Dell all the time. One time, a friend received two Laptops from Dell... and he was able to keep it, too, without being charged for the second because Dell never bothered to claim it.

As for the Vista DVD, I guess it's great to have two, since you'd have a back up in case you lose one. Other than that, it's kind of useless since you only have one OEM key to go with two DVD's.

I thought the license for OEM precludes reselling especially when not bundled with new equipment?

In my experience Ebay has been a b*stard about protecting license laws in their auctions.

It's funny you mention that because, every time I order a system from Dell, I ALWAYS get 2 Roxio Media Creator DE discs. And I mean ALWAYS!

Even with my completecare claimed XPS M170. The new M1710 came with 2 of them as well as my 1330's.

I know that software is garbage but I don't need it :)

Dell OEM Vista CD only work on Dell machine. Actually it only works on the Dell machine that has any Vista pre-installed. For other system, you'll have to hack the disk image. I don't see how it would have a market at eBay. Anyone with a Dell pre-installed Vista can request the CD for free. The Vista CD actually includes all versions (no matter what version it said). You just need the right key to install each specific version.
Moreover, you don't need a key to install any version of Dell OEM Vista on a Dell machine, of course, unless you want to select a different version to install.

does it physically have the coa sticker with the dvd? if it doesnt, you are breaking the law by selling that dvd.

It is probably legal to sell re-installation CD, but it does not give you a license to install it on another system.

i dont know, this is a gray area. because however, you can install that on most machines, dell or not... i believe to sell a piece of software like windows, you have to have that coa sticker that goes on the bottom of the laptop. without it you can not legally sell it. granted dell uses their own key, not the one on the bottom of your laptop, but still. ebay will knock that off faster than you can say windows vista 5 times.

It does NOT come with the product key. ANY Dell OS cd/dvd can be installed on ANY Dell machine as it bypasses product activation and does not ask for a product key during installation.

The DVD comes with it's own Serial Key on the CD envelope. If I put it up for sale, maybe a Dell computer owner will be interested. Besides I payed $30 for Vista Premium, I figure I can at least make $80.

I was also thinking about testing out a Vista installation on a system I built myself. To see if it works. But frankly I'm too lazy for that right now.

Yes, because they are mass produced, generic install DVD's. Still, what you get with your computer, is technically tied to that computer, legally speaking. You cannot transfer ownership of an OEM windows disk, that's just how it is. There really is nothing "gray" about it.

I'm not a lawyer, but I can tell you it's NOT legal. Read my post just above yours

But think of it this way, you have a backup just in case something happens with your first disk.

Isn’t there something like “ For distribution ONLY with a new DELL PC” written on the disk ? I guess that answers your question.

Perhaps some Dell owners who get the system before Oct. 06 with xp on it, or Vista basic when purchase but want to upgrade to Premium now, and would like to load Vista but do not want to pay the upgrade fee??

I am sure there are a huge number of such situations.

It states one version that will be installed by default, but can be switched to other version by using corresponding keys. It is not legal to do that though if you do not have a license for the other version. This has been reported early this year.

Are you sure you got the key (5 groups of 5 alphanumeric strings) on the sleeve? None of my Dell Vista DVDs has the key but just a different serial number for the media (CA-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxx-xxxx).

Can I load a Dell disc on the Dell xp computer which I bought this Feb from outlet? According to Microsoft all System bought after Oct 16 26 should be able to upgrade to Vista for free from their vendor? But Dell said not from system from outlet.

I have recently bought a new Dell system that come with Vista Disc?

And Dell said, even if you bought a full retail license, they are not going to support(technical support) me if I load Vista for I bought the system in xp. I am not sure how true it can be?

    Thanks.

They won't offer full support which means basically they can say at any time "we can't fix that for you, it's probably due to the non OEM OS you installed, sorry we are done here".

I asked if dell was intentionally selling a product that was not compatible with retail MS Vista software but bore the Vista Ready badge and they said yes.

You can try to sell it on Ebay, the most that will happen is that they'll pull the auction.

If it got the Vista OEM DVD with COA and key, it should be legal to sell it. There are a bunch of them on ebay already.

ebay will only let you sell OEM product with hardware. so sell them some hardware, but only ship the disk.

Since I get the system at Delloutlet - they said upgrade not apply to outlet machines.

Dell xps team actually very polite, they only "suggest" me to reload xp - or else there is only so much they can do, especially you cannot tell it is software or hardware issue.

Basically, they give me a choice, want to call Microsoft or Dell for support?

Now, can I load the retail copy(which I have used less than a week due to problem with noises in hard disk from bad to worse after Vista was loaded) when I am finished the self-build machine?
