I'm ordering a Vostro 1500 and the one thing that's been holding me back has been this glossy vs. matte debate. On the one hand I want to be able to see clearly in all environments, but on the other I want a higher resoultion. 1440 X 900 seems more desirable than 1280 X 800 for a 15.4" screen. On my desktop I'm using a 1280 X 1024 display and that's permanently filled with a variety of windows! Although I've never had a laptop before though so I'm only going on specs.
I'm edging towards glossy because the majority of the time I would be using this in rooms with relatively soft light. It's going to be an interim desktop replacement for the moment. But other times I might want to use it in college which could be irritating as there are a lot of lights/windows.
I'd probably be using it for extended periods of time too, so what would be the best bet for that? Some people complain of glare from the TrueLife screens hurting their eyes but others complain about having to squint due to the dullness of a matte screen. I hate to ask, but is TrueLife like the screen on the PSP? Or more/less reflective? I have one myself so this *might* give me some idea of how useable the laptop would be in certain environments![]()
I'm really quite confused at the moment because I can't find a definitive argument for or against either one, each seem to have an equal list of pros and cons! Hopefully some of the experts here can help me out![]()

Those posts have some good opinions in them if you haven't seen them yet. I think you have the right idea with the PSP, mine is almost impossible to play outside, it just ends up giving me a headache. I ended up going with the matte screen on my Vostro 1500 ordered friday. It sounds like you may want the extra desktop space that 1440 has to offer.
I'm not an expert on this but you should find out if dell will let you replace your screen after you buy it. Its either your gunna want the 1280 matte screen(because they dont offer matte in 1440) or the 1440 glossy. You should find out if you can upgrade your screen after buying it. -
I have the 1440 glossy in my Vostro 1500, it is beautiful.

i have the 1500 and had it with the wxga and replaced it with the wxga+ and its a HUGE difference for the better getting the higher res...i may have even gone higher, but i was afraid everything would be too small. but wxga+ is definitely great!

WXGA+ is definitely worth it, mine is superb.
Recommended screen for a Vostro 1500?
