I'm considering purchasing an E1505, and it comes with Windows Media Centre. There is an option to get either a PC Restore disc or a Windows Disc for $19 more. My question is; if you decide you would rather get the Windows disc, will you be able to create your own recovery disc? I would like to format the laptop to get all the crap-ware off it before I start using it..
Also, can anyone comment on Dell's service with defective hardware and laptops? is it good or bad? Should this sway me away from buying dell?
Thanks

i'm not sure about a pc restore disc. as far as i know, dell either offers the xp disc or a restore partition on the hard drive. if you get the windows disc, then you can use it to do a clean format. i don't think it is possible to create your own recovery disc other than to burn the restore partition onto a dvds which would retain all the crapware though
edit: is it possible to create a recovery disc? acer/sony/hp etc. lets you burn these but how about dell? -
based on my expereince with crappy hp, yes they have a software that comes in factory condition that allows you to burn out the cds. However, it takes 21 cd-r or 2 dvds, but you can't burn out just windows alone. It will basically restore the pc to its factory condition. So i would say its worth paying that extra 10 buxs for the cds because i believe you can choose the software you want to install rather than all the junk software that come in factory condition.

What section are you buying it from? There should be or at least was only two options as previously stated - either the Restore Partition or XP Disc. The restore partition is located on your HDD and will restore your laptop back to factory condition. The XP Disc will allow you to format and is an OEM disc, so it will contain no junkware.

You can save the cash and just call tech support once you have the computer for a few weeks and ask for the CDs to do a system restore. I have yet to have a problem getting free disks sent out for any of my customers with Dell systems...
-
yea you can call but be sure you get a nice guy. For example i called mine for HP, i debated back and forth for over a month. They told me they would send it during the first convo but later kept givin me bs that they don't have any left. For a large company such as HP to run out of recovery disk and the windows restore cd is total BS, and they said they will not get any new ones from now until october...that is why is you want the cds, just pay that extra money so it will arrive with your comp and avoid all the trouble of calling...etc.

- How many GB does the partition take btw?
and back to the original question
- I'm having a hard time understanding some of the comments. I should ask for the restore partition and ask dell for the windows disc? -
The restore partition is around 5 gb. As which to get, no matter what, I recommend to get the disc. You can either order that with your order and pay for it. Then you'll receive the disc with your laptop.
or
You can get the restore partition for right now and at a later point in time, contact Dell's Tech Support for the XP disc which they should send to you free of charge, but you might have to call them a few times to do that. -
I got e1505 from US

while i agree that you pay for a license and not the actual "media"; nobody is going to upload an .iso because (1) it'll take too long and (2) there is still a piracy issue as OEM versions don't require a key.
if you have a dell system, you are free to call/chat/email dell and request a disc. they overnight/2nd day them and it's free.
good luck. -
