A red line has appeared across my screen. It started a couple weeks ago and has been through many reboots. It goes from top to bottom, looks about a pixel wide, and is red on black backgrounds but blends in on white backgrounds.

Anyone know what this is? Is it time to call repair? Any advice from someone with experience would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like your LCD took a dump. you can try unistalling/reinstalling the drivers for your vidcard, but that particular type of problem is usually with the physical LCD.

That really sucks... And, if the problem is with the LCD, they can't repair it, they have to replace it. A lot of money...

if your warrenty has expired you could always look at replacement screens marked down off of eBay. Just do your homework first, many don't offer garuntees.

Preparing to call the repair department ...

I thought I'd do a screen capture of it. But the screen capture (PSPro, HyperSnap) doesn't show the red line.

Hmmmm, come to think of it, this shows that it IS hardware related, and not due to the XP or any other software, right???

I have an Inspiron 8200 and have the red line on the left side. Interestingly, it doesn't go all the way to the top of the screen.

Comments on other forums say that it's a bad LCD panel and you have to replace it.

Depending on the age of the computer, it may not be worth it.

all these people are wrong. it has happened to me as well

the reason you have a red line going across your screen (from top to bottom i presume)

is because you open your laptop from the same side every time eg always open it from the left side

you are not supposed to do this apparantley (i made this mistake too)

it bends the screen and causes the red line

DOES THE RED LINE DISSAPEAR WHEN YOU MOVE THE LAPTOP SCREEN UP AND DOWN?

    if so im correct

also, yes its time to phone up repair
you will need a receipt of your laptop and they will give you a customer referance number

    PS its free repair
