Hey guys,
I skipped the dumb project-red 1550 and ordered the regular M1550 because I didn't feel the need to pay a higher price for the same computer. I would however like to get my hands on the red cover to replace the black one in my order because I like the color better. I chatted with two Dell reps and they both said that I can only get it with the project-red offer and that the covers aren't even replaceable to begin with. Does anyone know if this is true and if I can find a red replacement cover somewhere?

if you are reffering to a skin then... www.skinit.com

<-- Got a M1330 Crimson Red before it went to the retarded PC "Project"
I think you're SOL unless you opt for a skin... which is fugurly IMO. -
hmm ... search threads there is a guy who painted his own laptop...It looked really good...It was neat .. ill see if i can find it for you then you can copy his steps

Thanks, but I'm not even about to attempt trying that. I will ruin it for sure!!

just call dell up and tell them you need a new top and ask if you can buy a red one
-
I was in the same boat as you, wanted red, settled for black, found it too bland and when Dell wouldn't sell me a red lid, I said "up yours" (not really) and did it myself. Got a different look out of it this way too. -
Ask someone with a Red m1330 laptop to print out their configuration list from Dell's Support website. Then look up the part number for the red casing. Call Dell Spare Parts and order the lid. Note that this may be quite expensive, because they may only sell a LCD bezel replacement kit which can cost around 60 bucks.

What's wrong with Product (RED) when buying Crimson Red? lol
Actually you're paying a "higher price" because it automatically comes with Vista Ultimate, as opposed to the default Home Premium in non-red 1530's. <strike>Try configuring two exactly specced laptops -- one red and the other non-red with Vista Home Premium -- and the price difference is like $150, which is the cost of upgrading from Home Premium to Ultimate.</strike>
EDIT: lol, shoot! Just tried it now, guess I'm wrong. The red is actually $80 more than a Jet Black configured exactly the same, except the former has Ultimate and the latter has Home Premium. My bad xD; -
Yeah Product Red is just a premium because of the branding...

Thanks for the input guys. Does anyone have a part number for the red cover? Maybe I can trick a tech into sending it to me.
Is the M1530's cover easy to remove? -
Choop,
Tech support will technically not send you a new lid unless the old one is affecting the performance of the system. Moreover, since you have a black lid, tech support will only do a like for like exchange. If you want to get a new colored lid, you will have to buy it through spare parts. -
Has anyone taken their lid off yet? Just how hard is that to do on this XPS model?
-
Although the price difference is $80, $50 of it is at least going to a worthy cause. So $30 for ultimate out of a $1200+ system? Why not. When you're shelling out big bucks for these premium laptops, why not help someone else while you're at it? If you're looking for saving every last dollar, you shouldn't be looking at an XPS.
I ordered a M1530 (PRODUCT) RED, and the rep I ordered with stated that it was only the second time she had ever sold a red while she had been working there 6 months. I guess there arent too many others that feel the same way
Red cover on non-red M1530??
