If I reformat and reinstall windows... does it void the warranty?
-
No it does not.
-
absolutely no
-
I don't mean to be smart, but which warranty would this be?
The Laptop company ,Dell? Or..
The OS maker Microsoft/Linux? Or..
The Hard Drive Manufacturer?
Think it over and you must realize, this is your laptop to do with as you please.
Just don't put certain "hacker tools" on you hard drive and go to Germany.
You will not only void your warranty of freedom but lose your laptop and face court charges.
There does this place your use of your laptop in a window of use?

As long as you don't make any physical modifications, you'll be fine.
It is not your fault you had to reinstall Windows because of all the crap Dell puts on there... -
Well.. regarding that, Im having second thoughts mainly because ive been reading about the 4 partitions dell makes.
1) Dell Recovery Partition (Hidden)
2) C: Windows
3) D: Recovery
4) Mediadirect Partition (Hidden)
I just tried a reformat on the other comp and I noticed that the folders in D: Recovery are not the same and are completely gone, and I have no clue about the hidden partition #1.
Is there a program you use to edit partitions that are freeware and doesnt install any junk? -
I've always used Partition Magic. It isn't freeware...
Does Vista automaticly update the recovery directory when you reinstall?
When I format, I might get rid of recovery and media direct. -
No, it literally reformats. Its very odd, Ive been experimenting many times now. It is very weird. This is what happens:
Mediadirect to Repartition
Option 2: Specify C Drive to 207GB (Max)
Vista Install to Partition 3 15GB
Result after Windows Loads - D Drive: 207GB C Drive: 15GB
---------------
Mediadirect to Repartition
Option 2: Specify C Drive to 207GB (Max)
Vista Install to Partition 2 15GB
Result after Windows Loads - D Drive: 0 bytes C Drive: 207GB
----------------
Mediadirect to Repartition
Option 2: Specify C Drive to 10GB (Max)
Vista Install to Partition 3 OR 2 15GB 207GB
Result after Windows Loads - C Drive: 10GB D Drive: 0 bytes
---------------------------
Mediadirect to Repartition
Option 1: All go to C Drive
Vista Install to Partition 2 215GB
Result after Windows Loads - C Drive: 215GB
------------------------
From what I can tell, the recovery D drive is gone forever, but the #1 hidden recovery partition is still there. Im comparing the differences between the two systems, one formatted and the other not formatted and the folder structure really is basically the same thing with a few added folders. Its not as bloated as I expected. It is the least bloated out of all the laptops I've ever owned. Just now im installing all the drivers, and the folders created as a result of installing new drivers is identical to the ones before I formatted so they are not linked to the registry or anything like that.
I think I will just keep it the way it is and not reformat my new one. -
That is weird.
So you can't just install on your existing partition?
I was going to install Partition Magic and make my C: for Vista @ 80gb, D: for recovery @ 20GB and E: for files @ 100GB.
If I did that, can't I just reinstall on C without any problems? When do you specify what partition you want recovery to go to? Is it automaticly D:
Maybe I am just confused for no reason. I'm not used to this media direct and recovery partitions. I am old school and just back stuff up on external hard drives, CDs, and DVDs. I never used the recovery thing in XP. I always reinstalled. If I lost anything, it was my own fault for not backing up. -
Yeah, after wasting about 5 hours of my time reformating, installing windows, reformatting, installing windows,...
Personally Im just gonna keep the recovery D drive and the hidden recovery partition. It may come in handy one day. I dont use externals drives myself I usually just keep things the way they are. Though the E1505.. yeah, that had lots of boat. The M1530 however... maybe because its XPS, really doesn't have much that make it worth it for me to reformat it. -
It will not void your warranty, but you won't get much support. If you have a video issue for example they will just link you to the updated driver as a best effort and for further troubleshooting they will ask you to install the original OS
