If you're having driver issues, all drivers for the E1405 are on Dells support site for download. Just download the ones you need and you'll be fine.

It finished installing xp and now theres a cmd window with another window in front of it at the top flashing red/orange that says installing applications and below it says "Please wait up to 30 minutes for the installation to complete". Whats it doing?

On the drivers.... Most of your hardware will be automatically detected by the CD and 'checked' for installation. But, that may not be everything you should install. Take look at ALL entries and see what matches your particular hardware. My experience was that the following files were not identified for installation....
Dell Quickset
Synaptics Touchpad
Dell OS Tools [Java]
And finally on my CD there were not any drivers for the ethernet 'card' [Broadcom 440x]. That I had to download from Dell's site. I also picked up the Broadcom 440x diagnostic utility and the Digital Line Detect utility.
fwiw... you may find that some of the CD drivers have been superseded by files from Dell's site. So may be worth your while to take a look

Just finished the install and the drivers, everything seems to be working fine. l now have maybe 8-10 things installed under add/remove programs compared to 50-ish from before the reformat
.
Reformatting my E1405 now, l hope everything goes well!
