Here's the dealio. I bought a Dell Mini 9 from the outlet and its already shipped. I'm having second thoughts though because of the $245 deal through Sam's club for a brand new one when I payed $230 for a used one. I'm also not sure if I even need a netbook since I have a XPS M1530 and want to hold off until the 09 Fall Semester to get a netbook (if I decide I want one).
So my question is this: Would I be charged a 15% restocking fee if I refuse delivery? Would I be charged a 15% restocking fee for returning through Dell? Does it depend on whether I open the box or not? Would I have to pay for shipping?/not be refunded shipping/taxes?
I've heard conflicting reports on both options. Some say that refusing delivery results in a longer time to credit my account. I heard the same for returning through Dell. I know Dell suggests you don't refuse delivery, but why? Just longer refund times or because they can't charge you a restocking fee?
P.S. I paid though Paypal with a Chase credit card. If I need to dispute a charge which should I use?
Thanks for any info.

Since you don't have it in hand yet, try calling them to cancel, as they might just reroute it back to the warehouse without charging you the restocking fee.

So I tried canceling with the Dell chat and they told me to call and after talking to three people, first to see if I could cancel, then to see if their was a restocking fee, then to see if the restocking fee would be 15% or less I got some useful info:
1. I can't cancel now that it has shipped
2. I would be charged with a restocking fee
a. Their policy is a restocking fee will be applied if there is a non-dell error
3. The fee would be the whole 15%
The last rep I talked to asked why I wanted to cancel and I told him because of the Sam's Club deal so he offered me a $20 coupon. I said I'd rather have it apply to my existing order and he agreed to do it.
Bottom Line: I'm getting my Dell Mini 9 for $208.
Linux, 1 GB Ram, 8 GB SSD, 1.3 camera.
I guess I'll try it out and if it I don't like it I'll try to sell it on craigslist. Might even be able to run a profit. -
Just for your future reference since I guess it is a moot point now. Refusing shipment will NEVER incur restocking fees from a company. There is some sort of mail order law in the U.S. that states if you refuse a shipment you can not be charged at all. I have done this plenty of times with things I ordered then no longer needed that should have had restocking fees or should have been non-refundable. (From companies such as Newegg, Dell, and Entertainment Book, all of which charge restocking fees)
speaking of which, how did you get to the customer service chat? I have not been able to find it on the website for over a year now -
there's no way they can charge you 15% for refusing the package. You should call another rep to check this out. Unless the box is opened and there's no dell error, then you will be charged 15%....in this case, you shouldn't be charge 15%.

If that doesn't work just go to dell, click the service tab and there should be a 'chat' link next to the dell logo. BTW clicking on support give us a 'chat' link that requires a service tag -

So do you guys reckon I should refuse delivery? I'm still not 100% sold on this especially after the sale Dell had today and with the new netbooks coming out; Dell Mini 10, Asus HE, etc.
The package is in NJ (I live in NY) as of 7:51 PM Monday and is estimated to arrive Tuesday by fedex, but in my experience packages that make a stop in NJ usually make one more stop the next day before they're put out on the trucks the following day. So about 25% chance it comes Tuesday and 90% chance it comes Wednesday.
To summarize:
I paid $228 for an 8GB SSD, 1 GB RAM, Ubuntu Dell Mini 9 with 1.3 MP camera from the outlet. Certified Refurbished.
I called Dell and they told me I would be charge a 15% restocking fee if I returned.
Dell offered me a $20 discount on this purchase so I wouldn't cancel, I took it. Final price $202
The package might arrive Tuesday, but most likely on Wednesday.(Nobody may be home though to answer Tuesday-Thursday anway)
Should I refuse delivery? Can I leave a note doing so? IF they try three times to deliver and no ones home what happens? and could I break even or even make a profit on Craigslist? -
I hate Dell Chat.. they're so slow to respond most of the time.
, and on the phone you usually get someone you dont understand, with a weird accent.

Lateinningmagic, I would refuse
As far as the chat, that is actually sales not customer care, so there is very limited customer care stuff they can do, I'm surprised they were able to offer you a discount (customer care used to have thier own devoted chat) -

Dell Marketing LP has issued a refund for $21.68 USD of your original payment.
My refund came in this morning.

Eek! This is gonna come down to a last second decision. I'm leaning towards keeping it now
My neighbor signed for it while I was at school, so problem solved. I'm keeping it! Now time to find out how to install XP on it.
