I just recieved the laptop this morning and I realized the severity of my mistake.

I'm thinking now that I should have bought the 15 inch screen instead cause my 17 inch is too big. I'm a college student, how am I supposed to carry this thing around?! And it will be embarassing to bring this to class and lectures. I probably will have the largest laptop in the room. I might as well carry around a mini-desktop. :(

ask to return it to dell because you are still in their 21 day return period. Complain that something is wrong and you may avoid the return shipping. I also own the E1505 and though many people say that it is very heavy, I find it to be very light for carrying around. A 15 inch sounds about right for you as I have it and it is not heavy. If you want to know anything about an E1505 then I can help you or choose another notebook.

Just give Dell a call, and you can return it. You have 21 days in all to return it.

Yeah, a E1505 will do fine. That is, if you liked the looks of the E1705.

You just get your money back, you have to rebuy.

Is the E1505 as well suited as the E1705 for playing games and videos?
Because I checked and E1505 has the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 whilst my current E1705 has the Geforce Go 7900.
Are both these video cards similar?

no. if you want to do gaming on it i would suggest the asus s96j. that will have a x1600 which is way better for gaming than the x1400 but still nothing compared to the 7900.

As mentioned, you have 21 days (from the date of the invoice) to return the notebook. There shouldn't be a restocking fee. Shipping isn't much, if you do end up paying for it.
I just sold a 4-month-old e1705, in large part because of the size (it is enormous) and the 1440x900 resolution, which I didn't like.
You might also want to consider a Latitude D620 from Dell Outlet, though Outlet can be tricky, as I'm right now discovering and discussing in a separate thread here.

i dont really see a reason for bringing a laptop to class. I like to take and notes and re-type them so it gets in my head.

Yeah, the x1400 and 7900GS are very differen't.

If your looking into gaming, i would look at a different notebook. Playing vidoes don't involve the GPU.

E1505 should be fine. When I first wanted a notebook, my criteria was under 5 lbs and 14.1". My E1505 is 6.5 lbs with a 9 cell and it's really not that heavy at all. Glad I got it. Wonderful battery life.

Wow, a 17 inch for college. To be honest I think the e1405 would be suitable for college. You are wanting portability right? The 14' is decent. Its not hard to see the screen and its lighter than the 15'.

Portability for carrying around is important. From personal experience of one who carries my computer everywhere, lighter is better. For me, I like to take notes in my computer because I'm really fast at typing. So I'd rather have my little laptop for notes than paper. I used to have a Sager that weighed over 10 pounds - too heavy. Now I have a Fujitsu I've carried everywhere for 3 years that weighs 5 pounds and I wouldn't want to go much more than about 5 pounds, especially when you start adding books etc. I'm looking at the Dell M1210 with the 12.1 inch lcd - that might be too small for some but it's perfect for me. I wouldn't probably go larger than a 14.1 inch in size - but that's me.

Thankfully, you have 21 days to return the larger lcd - I'm sure you'll be happy you did. Then, maybe you can go to one of the stores that sells laptops and look at the different lcd sizes and weights - it will give you an idea of what will work for you. They won't be exactly like the Dell but they will help you to see what size is easiest for you.

Anyone knows a laptop that is small (15 inches) but also good for gaming? For example it can hold a Geforce 7900.

Also what kind of excuse should I say if I want a refund from Dell?

It is physically impossible for a 15inch laptop to have a 7900 because there isn't much room in there to hold it and it would produce great amounts of heat, thats why its only in 17in or higher laptops.

There is no such thing. It's not impossible since it has been tried before (I remember a 15" Sager with the 6800) but it's not practical and/or cost effective. You will have to settle with the x1600 or the 7600 depending whether you have a preference for ATI or Nvidia. As it has been suggested before, there's an Asus with the x1600.

you dont really need a Dedicated GPU just to play videos...but if your gunna get into gaming get one with ATLEAST a Mobility X1600 or 7600. Anything below probably wont suit you.

Btw a 15 inch laptop isnt exactly portable either....perhaps look into the E1405?

Try taking a little personal responsibility for your mistake and tell them the truth. Lying isn't a way to go through life. Karma may catch up to you.

I'm hoping to play Rome:Total War, Medieval Total War 2, GTA 3 San Andreas and Half-Life 2 on high settings.

Are there any Dell Lap-tops that sell ones with X1600 or GF 7600?

There's none. HP has GF 7600 laptop, but it is 17" too. Asus, maybe Acer are your only options.

the e1705 is a tad too big and heavy. i doubt i'll be lugging it around much in college, unless if i'm rushing to finish a paper or something.

would it be unwise for the OP to return the e1705 for a e1505? i mean, if he got the e1705 during the coupon madness a few weeks back, he won't get as good a deal on the e1505 now that dell supposedly put a stop on the coupons.

I would get a 14.1" screen. Even a 15.4" is heavy to carry. Also Inspiron can be easily scratched. I dont like glossy screen. A business computer is the best.

I love the 17 inch screen and I don't think it will be a problem for me at college. It's surprisingly light (lighter than my brothers old 15" Dell, though it will probably stay in my room all the time. I don't know how many people will actually be typing during class. I think people's perception of it being huge and heavy is all wrong. Last, the 7900 alone makes it worth it. That was my reasoning and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
