I get as far as "starting windows setup" and it just sits there! Won't go any farther.

    Why?

The Xp installation CD was loaded in windows, choose reinstall, give serial #, copies files to disk, restarts, choose windows setup - just sits there at "starting windows setup" along the bottom of the screen.

What happened? After failing (apparently due to incomplete uninstall) to swap one 3rd party firewall for another I cannot get back to windows firewall (unable too start) to which all remedies at MS finally say try to "reinstall windows". Other problem is tcp/ip over broadcom ethernet won't work either now. And slow.

    Any suggestions?

Your disc might be damage. If you are still under warranty, I would contact Dell's tech support and request a new XP disc.

Thanks, SoGirl, I WILL do that! (Would thgat be hardware warranty? Yes, I paid a few bucks extra for the XP program CD).

It's kinda scary to know that if I REALLY needed that CD it would not have worked!

But I found a fix for the all the connectivity/firewall problems I described (that might have required the XP reinstall). It's at xp-smoker.com called XP TCP/IP Repair.

I was willing to do anything! I hope it ain't a trojan ;-)

The INSPIRON 9300 is back already running perfectly with the new firewall loaded.
