For those of you ordering this (or other) ultra high resolution screens on laptops remember to use the ClearType settings in the Display properties. It thickens the text and makes the ultra high res look very good IMO.

I will second that, I tried turning OFF ClearType and the font was very skinny and harder to read until I turned the feature back ON.....MUCH BETTER :)

In the sticks- this is on reason I will be a coninting monitor and contributor on this forum- I have had others help me a lot in my decision making and usage and it is a good thing to help others also- ESPECIALLY when we have to pay so much for these laptops that we use!

Another thing to try is to fine-tune cleartype through the Microsoft web-based tuner at http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/1.htm or download the cleartype tuner and do it purely locally from http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx

I like the clear type settings also, text looks much better and easier to read, but some pics and gifs looked all washed out when using the Dell supplied 120 dpi setting, here is a easy fix for that to make them look like the should with the dpi at 120. Just change the value from 1 to 0 and everything looks great! Or you could go back to 96 dpi but the text gets pretty small then.

Okay, everyone... I need a little more help regarding the resolution and font size. My eyes are killing me! I've got the WUXGA+; maximum resolution setting; 150 dpi; and ClearType fonts (with ClearType Tuner used, which made no difference).

With 150 dpi, the fonts on some of the buttons and pulldowns don't fit. In other words, fonts are a little large, but graphics, buttons, etc., are not. In some cases, everything crams together and I can barely tell what it's supposed to say.

Can anyone tell me how to set the display so that I can have larger, readable fonts; still good graphics; and have words fit on buttons, etc.

I've never owned a laptop or used a large screen like this, so I'm a complete NEWBIE when it comes to this. I have installed PowerStrip and it's sitting in my task bar, but am a little wary of using it to tweak my display settings without asking for help first.

    Suggestions??? Before I go blind....

I am feelin ya. "in the sticks". My eyes were bugging out for a few days too. The display definitely takes a bit of tweaking. I installed and then uninstalled powerstrip. Didn't really help me much. I would definitely use firefox for your browser. It is completely configureable and far as the font sizes that are rendered on web pages. I found that firefox helped alot. Most of the other apps that I use, I can configure. This display definitely takes a bit of getting used to. It seems that you are going in the right directions as far as what you are trying. Unfortunately, I think that if you don't find a solution you may need to get a laptop that can "clearly" handle a lower resolution. I am a bit bummed that You can not lower the resolution slightly. Even 20% would be nice. Good Luck. J.

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I love this laptop, and I'd really hate to send it back. Maybe I should try those glasses made to wear while working at the computer??? ha ha. My browser fonts and icons are great. No complaints there. And, I've changed to Windows XP with large icons for that issue. But, good Lord, the rest still isn't tweak-able without losing graphic/icon clarity. What a shame.

Thanks to you all (and heartofgold!) for the suggestions and links to other possible solutions. Now... maybe I WILL PUT IT IN THE FREEZER. Along with my burning, tired, aching eyes! Ha ha.

I am waiting for my 9300 now. I ordered ATI video card too. Does your ATI support WUXGA's native resolution of 1920x1200? ATI's web site says yes but Dell says no on its web site.

    Thanks!

Yeah... this laptop definitely took some tweaking. I see you have Win2003Svr intalled. I could not get it too load on mine. Was getting error stating this OS not supported. If you got it to load with all drivers... do tell. I have 2 extra drives on with a ghost of my current XP and one that I want to put 2003 on and test/develop.

I am glad to know that ATI supports it. For LCD display, you'd better set to its native resolution or it is not going to look clear. If the font is too small, set "use large font" in the display settings. You can even set whatever the font size you like.

I really think that 1680x1050 is the highest res that should be used on a 17 inch. It'd what Alienware uses on their machines. I usually have to increase font size at least 2-3 times to get readibility when web browsing. I read all my news, and blogs everyday, and I have found this super hi-res to be pretty annoying. Sure games and DVD's look fantastic.. but readibility is just as important if not more.

It would be great if there was a browser plug-in that could make the app render as if it was running 1024 or something similar. Images, fonts, etc would all be the same scale as if they were on that resolution. Impossible? probably.. but it would help quite a bit.

Just ordered a Dell 9300 (my first laptop). I hadn't realized until I read this thread that I would be stuck with the high-res of 1920x1200. I have a 19" monitor and have tried out 1600x1200 a few times but have always found everything way too small.

So I guess I want to confirm all the tweaks I'd have to make to my laptop at least somewhat readable.

    1) Clear Type ON
    2) Large Fonts (I assume this is in the general display options? Or will I have to change it for all my applications seperately?)
    3) Large Icons

Any other tweaks that I missed? I do a lot of reading on the internet and don't want to have to stick my face right up to the screen to read it properly.

Another thing I noticed is that the majority of internet sites aren't set up to use a full screen at that resolution so you have the whole page taking up only half of the screen. Do you guys just live with that? Or do you open up half-sized internet browser windows? Just using Internet Explorer right now. Would Firefox be better?

Thanks for the help, should be getting my 9300 in a week or so. Hope I don't have to return it because of this.

    heartofgold,

I have returned my i9300. Yes, I got the truelife... ...and what a mistake in my life! The light leakage at the bottome covers almost 20% of the screen. Whenever you display something black (at the boot-up, or windows default display), it looks very greyish with hugh whiteish patches! If you have ever seen really bad black paint on a white surface, you now what I mean.

I did hear that the regular display is better but did not bother to replace it myself. I paid that amount of money for Dell's top of the line product. I deserve a MUCH better product.

I have seen my friend's HP zv5000. Its display is stunning. I think I will buy a HP zd8000 later.

I agree with pillowhead that 1680x1050 should be the max used on a 17" display. I don't think anyone can read on the truelife using 96 dpi. Actually it comes with 120 dpi as default.

Take a close look when you power up the laptop or when windows default screen saver starts (black background with moving windows).

I wish you good luck on getting a better display!

    heartofgold,

Yes, the bad display itself is enough for me to return it. It is really the display that we stare all the time for a computer, not its CPU, hard drive, or memory. And I, actually all of us comsummers, am not supposed to do Dell's QC and assembly work. That is why I am not interested in calling them and replacing the LCD by myself even though I know how to do it as an EE engineer. Besides its LCD, it is also very slooow because Dell installed some many junk (sorry, have to use this word) sofwares on it. Be sure to clean them up when you get yours. For you heartofgold, keep it if you get a good display. Its bottom half is not bad after all.

One lesson I learned is I'll never buy a laptop without seeing it in person. I did a hell lot of research before I bought it even though I heard so many complaints about its display. I was just hoping I would be lucky to get a good one but ... ...

As to hp zd8000, I think you mean the sperate TV tuner you have to buy in order to watch TV using the Media Center XP. I have a HP media center desktop already and love it so I don't need to watch TV on zd8000. (is this the flaw you are talking about?)

Oh Dell is actually very fast on shipping. For me, ordered on Thursday night and got on Wednesday.
