    Hi,

I contact you because I bought a Dell Studio 1735 a while ago and since I dont like Windows Vista I changed the OS to XP. Reading this forum I managed to make everything work, Wifi, TouchPad, Video, Sound which was a Sound Blaster Audigy not the one that comes in the Std Studio model and everything else BUT the remote control.

I installed the drivers for the IR port from http://dellstudio.jeroenzelle.nl/ and it says the device is working properly, yet the remote is not functional.

Has anyone been able to make the device work under XP?

    Really, no one?
Maybe just a hint could lead me to finding the solution. =)

Hint: the Studio notebook series was not designed to work under XP, which is why Dell does not provide XP-compatible drivers for them. If I were you, I'd consider myself lucky I got everything to work in the first place.

That said, try and find another driver for that IR port. The remote itself should be plug-and-play if the IR port is working.

Silly question...have you tried changing the battery in the remote? :p

Well, yeah I feel kinda lucky, you can say that but no luckier than the average joe that hates Vista and likes Dell. =)

I would try to find another driver for the IR port, who knows, maybe one from another manufacturer does the trick.

Oh and yes I did check the battery on the remote. :)

Thanks for the reply Mastershroom and of course anyone who believes to have another possible solution, feel free to post.

BTW I found out that the remote for the 1535 model is the same one.

I'm pretty sure that remote is more or less universal among Dell notebook models. I know a couple guys who have the XPS M1530, and that has the same remote as well. I'm sure the Inspiron series does as well.

Also, why all the Vista hate? It certainly had its contingent of issues at first, but let's not forget XP wasn't exactly perfect on launch either. Vista's come a long way since those days, especially with Service Pack 1.

With Vista I had issues trying to share files over a network where certain machines had Vista and others had XP. I also feel way more comfortable with XP Windows Explorer, there is also a whole lot more software XP compatible than Vista compatible, and as you can guess I don't use Windows Media Player either, so compatibility is important for me. All the nice looks of Vista don't really justify an OS change. Let alone the massive amount of resources that system consumes for no real reason. I didn't like the use it gives to my ram, there were times that I had virtually no application running and I was above 2 Gigs of Ram occupied.

For me it was just a marketing movement from Microsoft to impose a system that clearly lacks the efficiency of its predecesor. Anyway, I think they already realize that fact and are working faster to put out Windows 7 asap. I can only hope that when they do, Dell will provide us with driver support for it, otherwise one can only think about changing one's hardware.

Do we see a monopolistic policy here? naaaahh :)

Vista uses a lot of RAM because it manages memory much more efficiently than XP. The way I see it, I bought 4GB to make use of them, and not restrict everything to only use 1GB. If I only wanted to use 1GB of memory, then I would have bought 2 sticks of 512MB.

I know for sure that Vista sucks at managing memory but since this is not the motive of the thread I'll just leave it at that.

And as I said before, if anyone knows the trick to make the remote control work under XP, I'll be more than thankful.

    Thanks in advance.

That's actually the opposite of what I just said. Vista has much better memory management than XP.

I'm not going to argue the point, though. If I knew where to get your IR drivers for the remote, I'd give 'em to you, but I don't know where to get that.

You're confusing Vista sucking at managing memory with Vista using more RAM than XP because it's the newer OS. Get your facts straight.

Listen, if you prefer Vista that's ok for me. I'm not trying to convince anyone to change his OS, I'm just looking for someone to help me solve my remote control problem.
